Four talented youngsters win Inter Regional Petanque tournament

Steady hands and pin-point accuracy were needed as four talented youngsters won the Inter Regional Petanque competition held at Hayling Island.

Petanque is a French form of boules where the aim is to throw hollow metal balls as close to a wooden cochonnet as possible.

Sam Mellen of Victorians club, Chris and Gavin Wilmot from Theydon Bois and Harry Waldie from Witham made up the Eastern Counties Region's junior team who saw off England and Wales' top sides to claim the trophy.

Notable victories included coming back from 8-2 down against tournament favourites Southern counties to win 13-11, a 13-0 trouncing over East Midlands and beating Isle of Wight 13-11 to take the championship.

Waldie will represent England in the European Championships in October to be held in Belgium.
