Doherty named new Wanderers captain
GARY Doherty has been named Wycombe Wanderers’ new captain.
The 32-year-old, who joined the Blues after being released by Charlton last week following a successful loan spell last season, has been handed the armband by boss Gary Waddock.
Waddock said the former Republic of Ireland international was the “obvious choice” to succeed Gareth Ainsworth as skipper.
It is expected veteran Ainsworth, 39, who was recently appointed player-coach, will become more of a squad player this term.
Waddock said: “Doc's experienced and well respected by the whole of the dressing room and amongst the fans.
“I didn't discuss it with him before he moved, but we've had a chat and I think he was a bit surprised. It's the right choice and it was an obvious decision.”
The ex-Tottenham and Norwich defender will be deputised by long-serving midfielder Matt Bloomfield, who is entering his ninth season at the club.
Waddock added: “Like Doc he is respected within the group and he's a very good professional.
"He has been at the club for a long time and knows it inside out.
"I'm very happy having him as vice-captain and am sure he will do a great job."
