A PAIR of young cricketers from the News Shopper region enjoyed a day to remember after winning the chance to take part in a net session with England World Cup winning captain Paul Collingwood.
Jack Thomas, 20, from Catford, and his guest Mike Field, 24, from Hayes, spent a day at Durham CCC with the highlight being an hour-long net and coaching session with experienced all-rounder Collingwood who advised the pair on both batting and bowling.
Thomas and Field won the prize in a competition organised by Skins and published in the monthly cricket magazine All Out Cricket.
The competition prize featured a tour of Durham’s international stadium before the net session and a workout which included a full warm up and batting and bowling analysis.
Thomas said: “It was a fantastic day and an unforgettable experience.
“Colly taught us all a great deal and it was brilliant to learn from him.
“He talked specifically to me about my footwork when batting.
“It all made perfect sense and I immediately felt more comfortable.
“The experience was one I'll never forget and hopefully I can put it to good use for the rest of the season.”
Collingwood added: “It was a great day and I thoroughly enjoyed the lads' company.
“Jack and Mike are clearly decent players and it's always nice to meet keen cricketers so the session was really enjoyable.
“Hopefully the guys have been able to learn something useful from me and having seen them in action I'll be watching out for their names on the opposition team sheet at future matches for Durham some day.
“Good luck to them both for the rest of the season and beyond.”
