Laurence Bassini claims Pozzo takeover of Watford is off

Watford owner Laurence Bassini claims the takeover of the club by the Pozzo family is off.

Bassini stated yesterday that the deal was agreed and all he was waiting for was the “proof of funds” from the family who run Italian side Udinese and Spanish club Granada.

Sources had claimed the Watford owner was being pressurised into leaving the Hertfordshire club by their bondholders.

But Bassini was adamant he was leaving on his own accord and stated on several occasions he expected to receive around £12m for the club.

An hour ago Bassini contacted the Watford Observer and said: “They don’t have the money [I want for the takeover] so I’m not doing the deal.

“They didn’t provide the proof of funds and it is not transparent enough so that is that.

“They have so many partners but they don’t have the money.

“The deal is definitely off. They do not have the money. What can I do?”

not clear whether he was holding out for more dosh and the pozzos refused to increase their offer or whether they don't have the money in the first place. i suspect the former.

baz is not very clear in his statements. maybe the bondholders will have the final say in all of this if indeed he has breached the terms of the buyout..

Dear Laurence Bassini (Bazzini)

Since you took over our club several months ago you have provided us supporters with nothing more than utter cods wallop.

Your total amateurish approach at running a football club is comical. Your too scared to turn up at a fans forum, stating you were Ill. I hated PE at school, so I used to pretend I was Ill.

You are nothing more than a petulant child...sorry, a fat petulant child, in a balding old mans body.

Stop using our football club as a pawn in your tainted commercial background and crawl back under your rock that you appeared from.

You have ruined any chance of the club moving forward through nothing other than pure greed and your egotistical approach at dealing with, what the Pozzo's probably considered, a sensitive deal.

This is from me, and 12,000 Watford Supporters, your not welcome at the Vic and your not welcome in Watford.

And take your poxy salt beef stand with you, you Toby.

I can't imagine they give a flying one about that.

They own 2 successful top flight clubs - they have the money, they probably decided they couldn't do business with such a clown of a man.

So, let me get this straight - the holding company which owns WFC now has just Bas as sole director...?

Do we know that for certain?

They weren't going to pump millions in.

Disappointing though as now we've probably got an unsettled manager and lost out on new signings.

Last summer Udinese sold 3 top players for 50M€ and bought others for 10M€ (yet they improved position in Serie A). Recently they sold two other good players to Juventus for 30M€ (15 now and 15 next year). I seriously doubt they have not the money. But Pozzo family is quite tight with money: strict salary cap for players and I don't think they ever bought something or somone overpriced. I don't know much about WFC and its current owner, but I think he simply asked too much compared to real value. Pozzo's are competent businessmen, not sheiks throwing away money.

What I find interesting about the statement from 21/6 is that it is both very carefully worded, and released by Watford Association Football Club Ltd, rather than the holding company (Watford Leisure), or Baz's takeover vehicle (Watford FC Ltd).

Franson and Timperley "received notice" that they had been "removed" from the Watford Leisure Board.

This is unusual wording. Normally you'd expect such directors to "step down", or maybe "resign their position". Neither is there any mention of this being due to the necessity of any eventual takeover.

Something tells me Baz might have been manoeuvred into the position of defaulting on the bond terms...

Bravo.

Pozzos have spotted a desperate chancer. He has no credibility, no class. Ashcroft's people have probably been feeding the Pozzos the truth, it's a question of time. Baz came in for one reason, make a quick buck. He's run out of time, money and options- he's cornered so he makes one last pathetic stand. He will fail- Ashcroft will not let the business fail, hence the bond conditions. He's a fool because this is his chance but he's also a fool because he's greedy and has limited judgement.
