Laurence Bassini insists all transfer money has stayed inside Watford's accounts

Watford owner Laurence Bassini insists he has “never taken a penny out of the club” and that all transfer money received during his tenure has remained in the Hornets’ accounts.
The Golden Boys are on the verge of being taken over by the Pozzo family, who own Italian side Udinese and Spanish club Granada.
Bassini bought Watford for £440,000 last summer but claims to have put £8m to £10m of his own money into the club, alongside the millions received in transfer funds.
During his reign at Vicarage Road, Bassini set up a transfer account alongside the club’s usual account.
Money from the transfer account would be put into the club’s usual account when needed.
The Stanmore businessman insists he has not received any money from either account and that the funds from the transfer account will remain with the Hornets following his pending departure.
Bassini told the Watford Observer: “The money from that account (transfer account) stays with the club. It always has. I have never taken any money out of the club. The only money I will have received is from the takeover money.”
The Hornets owner has denied claims he was being forced out of the club by their bondholders for an ‘event of default’ in the offer document from the takeover.
The bondholders are still entitled to in excess of £7.5m and annual payments are due every March, as well as quarterly interest payments.
Bassini stated several weeks ago that he wanted to pay off the bondholders and the club’s £1m overdraft. But until he pays off the money owed, he still needs to abide by certain covenants and events of default which were in the offer document.
Sources told the Watford Observer the Pozzo family were not planning on spending much buying the club and wanted to make a similar bond repayment agreement.
However, Bassini described this as “rubbish” and claims he will be receiving in excess of £12m for the club.
The Watford Observer understands the Pozzo family – father Giampaolo and son Gino – will have a number of investors alongside them as part of the takeover.
We also believe former West Ham United chief executive Scott Duxbury has been part of the negotiation team working for the Pozzo family.
It is unclear whether Duxbury will take on a CEO role at Vicarage Road following the takeover, but we do expect former West Ham technical director Gianluca Nani to have a role with the Hornets.
Duxbury and Nani worked together at West Ham, alongside Gianfranco Zola, who has been linked with the manager’s position at Vicarage Road.
Duxbury resigned from West Ham in January 2010 following the club’s takeover. He was criticised for his role in the Carlos Tevez affair which cost the Hammers £30m.
Alongside the money Bassini claims he will receive, we also understand he may be given the Red and Yellow Lion pub in Vicarage Road, which is owned by the Hornets and reopened this year.
The Watford owner confirmed this may be the case.
He replied: “The pub is still in the club’s ownership at this moment in time. The answer is I do not know. We will see. I have spent £500,000 of my personal money on the pub so I will make the decision.”
He added: “There was a valuation of the pub made and I paid that money into the club’s account and I haven’t had it back so I have been offered the pub as part of the deal.”
Yesterday (Thursday), David Fransen and Stuart Timperley were removed as directors of Watford FC’s holding company, Watford Leisure Limited.
However, the duo will remain as directors of the club (Watford Association Football Club Limited) There are three companies currently in use relating to the ownership of the club. Watford Association Football Club Limited is the club itself, Watford Leisure is the holding company which has been in use for many years and Watford FC Limited was set up by Bassini to take over the club.
The Watford Observer understands Fransen and Timperley's removal as directors of Watford Leisure is because the holding company will remain in Bassini’s control following the takeover by the Pozzo family, which is still set to take place.
On the duo’s removal, Bassini said: “Now I don’t have to keep contacting them regarding the sale. It makes it easier.
“People are going to say things but I don’t want either of those men to have a black mark against their names. They are great guys.
“They will still be advising me and helping me but I can’t keep asking them to leave meetings elsewhere every five minutes.”
Bassini also added: “If the club needs any money in the future then I am happy to lend them a couple of million, like David Fransen did.”
There have been bitter divisions within the club itself and these came to a head last week when Police were called to the ground following an incident relating to access to the club safe.
On Monday, June 11 the Stanmore businessman went to Vicarage Road and requested the keys to the safe but it is understood a senior member of staff refused to release them.
The Hornets owner then suspended the employee and the police were called to remove the person from the premises, although no arrest was made and the Police described it as a “civil matter”.
Bassini confirmed: “I asked for my keys to the safe. It is my safe.
“The employee wouldn’t give them to me. I suspended that person and had the employee escorted from the building by the police.”
While Bassini confirmed this incident had taken place, he rubbished suggestions HM Revenue and Customs is currently investigating the club for unpaid taxes and National Insurance contributions.
After the Watford Observer went to press last Thursday evening, Bassini said: “Utter nonsense. Where are you getting this? There is no truth, it is nonsense.”
HMRC has refused to confirm whether an investigation is taking place due to confidentiality reasons.
Bassini has split opinion among staff at Watford since his arrival in March 2011 and upset many when former chief executive Julian Winter and his deputy Michael Jones departed last summer.
Employees were upset further last month when their wages were not paid on the usual date and they were not informed of the delay until the day they expected to have the money in their accounts.
Bassini rejected the suggestion employees had been paid “late, stating: “In the contracts, wages need to be paid around the end of the month. They were paid on the 30th.”
The Watford Observer understands some businesses had cheques from Watford FC declined in recent weeks. Bassini claimed it was because he froze the accounts due to the in-fighting behind the scenes.
According to the Hornets owner, he lodged £5m with lawyers so the club could pay its bills but he wanted a debenture to ensure he would not lose the money should he be forced out.

clearly he has been financing the club by selling all our best players.
if the bondholders allow him to take one penny from the club they need to be held accountable.

Sorry but no contract would state that the wages will be paid around the end of the month. They were late. Been confirmed by people at the club. Lies lies lies.

However, as I have said all along, until there is proof that he has done something bad I can only see that he has moved our club forward.
Obviously the transfer money has kept the club going, as it has done at 95% of the clubs in the league.
I think the £8-10 million could be inflated a little but as a loss making company I'm sure he has had to put in some money along the line (and I'm not talking just the £440K he purchased the club with).
He isn't as bad as previous owners, so I would expect a businessman to try to make money on a deal.

Not Bazzini, as Luther has pointed out yes the club HAS been financed by selling players. As it would have if Lord A was still owner as it would have if the Russo's were still at the club. Whats shocking about that?
The 8-10mill probably includes payments to the bondholders too so considering what has been put into the club by previous owners just to keep it going it may be about right if a little inflated.
But ultimately even if he has taken money out of the club, which he states he hasnt and no one can actually prove otherwise, then as owner he'd have been perfectly entitled to! Unlike previous owners with far more money LB has started on improving the ground and pitch and has given money to improve the squad.

"I am happy to lend the club a couple of million in the future".
Is that because you have run the club purely on the sale of its assets since you took it over?
The sooner this deal is done the better. I am delighted that a real football family is buying the club, but to be honest I would be happy even if Ronald McDonald was taking over from Bas.
One last word for BAS, should you be disclosing information about the deal at this stage? Are you sure you are not going to upset the Pozzo's by contravening any disclosure agreements? They didn't appear to be too happy with your recent "Deal is agreed in principle" press release.
Please don't foul this up and move aside as quickly as possible.
Perhaps our new owner will actually talk to the fans perhaps??? Or is that old fashioned these days?

LB did, without a doubt, save WFC from administration, but if this sale falls through he could also be the person that pushes it into administration if he runs out of money.
Supporters have been moaning about his lack of communication, and now we are getting communication that is not needed and damaging.
Does anyone else agree that he should stop running to the press with these pointless snippets of information until the deal is done?

From the Pozzo reaction (on Udinese website) about Bas's comments "Deal agreed in principle" they were not happy.
This latest press release is not going to help matters.

Most contracts of employment state something vague along the lines of payment "before the end of the month" and then companies adopt a process that fits within that, eg the last Friday in the month. I guess the usual payment date wasn't met but they were paid within contract.
Anyone else concerned that the Pozzos originally wanted to leave the bondholders in place? Why? Surely if you are rolling in €€s you'd pay the few £m to get them out of the picture ? Why are they joined by other local investors if they are so rich ?

If the outgoings are anywhere near what they were when the Russo's were around then the player sales wouldn’t have covered outgoings either so money has had to be put into the club on top of that, even more if you include the pitch etc.
Why are you knocking LB for something that is the way of life for the majority of clubs? The new financial rules mean that owners will no longer just be able to pump money into a club, so don’t expect that from the Pozzo's, and the reality is what has happened at WFC over the past three or so years puts it in a better position than many bigger clubs.
I aso doubt if the potential new owners are serious a few little snippets of information from LB are going to put them off. What do they care?

I welcome this takeover not because I think Bas has done anything wrong but that I think he's taken us as far as he can and these new guys have a proven track record involving football clubs, albeit with a couple indiscretions thrown in.
Harrydownunder, most clubs are run on the sale of assets! The Russo's sold assets to keep the club going, and Lord A if he had stuck around would have happily sold players (including AM even at a knock down price) if it meant him not getting his own wallet out.

From what I can work out, he spent over £500k of Watford FC's on refurbishing a pub? So that £500k+ goes in to the coffers of Yellow and Red Lion Ltd (his company) whilst the club continues to struggle paying it's bills.
I dread to think how much money was siphoned off this way and my guess is that the Yellow and Red Lion will not file it's first year accounts / will go bankrupt.
But please, let's not congratulate him on the pub, he used it as a vehicle to take a lot of money out of the club as far as I can see.

Bassini keeps the holding company and nobody believes he's been linked to the Pozzo's from the start! .... proof positive as far as I'm concerned and good reason why GT was so quiet about Baz's appointment.
Re the pub, he claims £500k of his own money was invested which is owed by wfc to him. This should be easy to prove. What value is the pub per the valuers ? Bit odd if it just happens to £500k so its given to him to pay off the debt !! This would mean either it had no value before he spent £500k, or that spending £500k was a waste of money as it didn't add £500k to its value. If value is more than £500k, he must pay the extra to wfc. Directors cannot just let a company sell an asset for less than its worth, they have a fiduciary duty.

Assuming staff had traditionally been paid on the last friday of each month, the last Friday in May was the 25th. By withholding salaries till the 30th employees would have gone a weekend and several days before money entered their accounts. This is would be appalling and contemptuous way to treat staff. The only surprising thing is that workers are 'split' on their opinion of Baz.

Make no mistake the damage was done to our club under a previous regime and the WFC staff who support ex chief execs who did not deal with the cash flows properly in previous years have a mis placed loyalty or more likely should not be in their jobs.
like Bringe and Luther have stated in different ways Bas may not be easy to trust but what he has done appears not to have been detrimental to the club and despite the so called assertions of fact by many it appears he has not done us any harm just good.
from what I can glean there was always Italian money somewhere in the background and if the deal does go through it may help with transparency in the future.
As for the Red Lion I do not think WFC has spent very much at all on this project and the initial cost seems to have been paid in, so if it goes but stays open we have a facility that has not been there for some time.
As for late wages, slow payment etc this is happening all over it is not pleasant whether you are well paid or poorly paid but it is part of the world we live in. yes it is appalling and contemptuous, just as paying your suppliers later is, or the banks behaviour etc but it is life even if it is not right.
For me as a chairman/owner I see nothing that indicates Bas has been worse than Homer, Rossi or Taylor and to date he has been more helpful and not taken a wage or apparently a penny. in no way is the aforegoing a reflection on anybody's integrity, nor their previous stints as manager...just in their most recent roles.

If they are so sure of their libellous claims they should put them in the public domain and contact Baz to tell him they have done it. Can I hear weasel words coming from the unhappy clappers? I think so.
If the Pozzo family do take over they will have obviously ignored but most probably be oblivious to the vitriol spewed forth from the unhappy clappers on this forum.

Get off Bassini's back he is the most honest & wealthy chairman we have ever had.

1) Life long fan of the club
2) Have pots of cash
3) Have no connection to Brian Robson

5) Be a national treasure with a massive back catalogue of Piano based rock classics
6) Not be from the Far East and prepared to change the club colours to pink and mauve in order to win a dodgy spread bet.
Baz is not a lifelong fan and the club have held their own but he comes across as an opportunist who got lucky. I think history will (hopefully) show he was better then Simpson, Petchey but worse than SEJ (and who could really be compared to him!).

Yes he is not perfect. Yes something doesn't seem right. Yes, we ALL want the Pozzo's to take over. But I still do not understand how you can deny that WFC is in a better state now than it was 14 months ago?
Now I expect you to say I am not welcome at the Vic or something as similarly stupid, but at the end of the day, we agree we want rid.

Chris the Vic wrote: For heaven's sake over half the contributors do not read what is said, re-invent the facts with their own assumptions and write utter rubbish. For me as a chairman/owner I see nothing that indicates Bas has been worse than Homer, Rossi or Taylor and to date he has been more helpful and not taken a wage or apparently a penny. in no way is the aforegoing a reflection on anybody's integrity, nor their previous stints as manager...just in their most recent roles.Spot on

We haven't heard much from the Pozzo family since the rather sharply worded statement the other day saying the talks for any deal was basically only in its initial stages than the advanced suggestions the media gave.

Nothing he says can be trusted and he doesn't even try to be evasive: he just flat out lies.
No way has he paid £8-10m in to the club and no way have all the transfer funds remained within the club. I don't believe a word of it.
I want this man out of Watford FC before there is no longer a Watford FC for him to be out of.

I do know Bassini. All I tell you is that - everyone that knows this di**head will tell you that he is a trickster and always has an ulterior motive. In life he has never gotten too far. everyone that knew him in the old days (when he lived in Denis lane, Stanmore) could tell you about his habit. Let's just say, I'm very surprised he still has a nose.
This is a man who somehow, managed to trick an amazing looking woman into marrying him and having a child. Once she realised he was a useless peice of human waste she divorced him. The question is how, did he manage to get full custody of his daughter? How did he manage to convince the judge? As you probably all know, it's normally the woman who gets custody. She still loves her child very much but due to limited funds ( living in a really tough council estate in London, living on poverty line) she cannot afford to fight anymore.
It's not that all the pro bassini supporters are stupid, just misguided.
I could tell off really cruel things he's done to animals. Also about how whilst he's had money within this short period, he's been investing it into other ventures which noone knows about, when in reality this money should have been used for your pitch and the stands etc..
The one venture he couldn't hide was the pub, but this was done via another company he owns and it's been well published, the pup goes with him.
The shame is - Laurence should have been a double glazing salesman, because I gaureente you, that everyone in Watford would have double glazed windows by now. Instead all he's done, is take your money from the sales and spent it on other things. Not a bad return for some crumby £400k.
I know all you pro Bassini fans will say where's your proof? All I can say to that is " fxxx your proof. I don't really care at all about Watford, your club or the idiots that think he's doing good".
If a judge was convinced by Laurence, what chance have you pro Bassini fans got.
But don't worry, Bassini will get away with it again not not a single person will do anything about it!!

Also its not right that you slate people who dont actually know the chap personally and who quite rightly wish to judge him on what he has actually done at the club.
If you care so little about our club why do you persist in posting about it?
