  • "I am glad we are a selling club and the long run I think it benefits the club. We are a developing club, one that identifies, develops and then gives a chance to young talent. This means that when the next generation of talent is coming through we are seen as a club who will give youth a chance, will provide a sound footballing education and then gain a fair fee for selling the player onwards and upwards. This is the pact that players buy into when joining the club either at youth or developmental level (like Danny Graham for instance). Sean Murray turning down Man City seems to have been playing the long game, knwoing that he will get a far greater chance to shine at first team level in the championship and then get his move a little later on. The alternative approach of going early to a bigger club didnt work for Harry Forrester and it could be fairly argued nor did it work for Chris Eagles who had to step down on loan and then permanently to a champioship club.
My concern is that financial fair play, if enforced correctly (which I am not sure it will/could be) might driv down the compensation that a club such as Watford would be able to reasonably ask as other clubs will have to work within their budgets eventually.

Someone at the club has been doing something right for some time at youth/academy level - so well done to Tom Walley, Kenny Jackett and all who have followed them (too many to name) who dont get the individual limelight but do a great job for the club and the players"

Watford understood to have received enquiry from Reading for Adrian Mariappa

Watford have received an enquiry for Adrian Mariappa from Premier League newcomers Reading, we understand.

There has been speculation linking the Hornets Player of the Season with a move to the Madejski Stadium but if a firm offer is received, it is unlikely that any deal would be concluded soon as the defender is currently on international duty with Jamaica.

The renewed top-flight interest in the 25 year old, who has a year remaining on his current deal at Vicarage Road, is not a surprise on the back of an impressive campaign, during which Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic bid for him in January.

Speaking to the Watford Observer before the end of the season, Mariappa confirmed he was “happy to stay” but said: “No I can’t really say there have been any decisions yet. Football is a funny old game and you don’t know what could happen because things change in a short space of time.

“The way I looked at it during the speculation in January was just to concentrate on training and games and take each game as it came. If anything arises, then deal with it. That is how I have always looked at it and that is how I will look at in the future.”
