GARY Waddock feels Wycombe Wanderers will pick up positive results in their crucial upcoming relegation showdowns if they replicate the performance shown against Sheffield United.
The final 3-0 scoreline flattered the Blades as an outstanding defensive rearguard looked as if would give Blues a deserved point.
United’s class eventually showed but Waddock said if his players can reproduce that against fellow strugglers Yeovil Town and Walsall in the coming week, they will pick up some points.
Reflecting on the Sheffield United game the Blues boss said: “They’re disappointed because they can see the work and effort they’ve put in and they can see the goals they’ve conceded – they’re frustrated by that. Now we’ll take our frustrations into Tuesday’s game.
“If we go into these games in a positive manner and we pick up some points, we can see ourselves in a healthier position. It will be hard because the opposition we are playing against will be thinking the same as us. We’ll be ready and prepared for the next three or four weeks.”
Wanderers fielded a back five against United and Waddock said he will look to change things around on home soil.
He said: “I’ll freshen it up because of the effort the players have put in. Bearing in mind Yeovil haven’t played today as well, I will freshen it up, but the players should be happy with the performance. We didn’t get anything out of it but I’m sure the fans will look at it and see a committed group of players.”
Waddock was left to bemoan his side’s lack of luck as deflections played a part in the first and third goals Blues conceded against the Blades.
He said: “We had a game plan and it worked up to a point until the first goal goes in.
“There’s a challenge which spun back in their favour and it goes into the path of their striker, then the third goal a shot from outside the box which I’m told was going wide hits a player and goes into the back of the net when Bully’s going in the opposite direction.
“If you’re up near the top it goes for you. In the position we’re in, it goes against you.
“I thought the players showed a hell of a lot of commitment. They showed a lot of qualities we’re looking for. Sheffield United are a good side, they had a lot of possession but I thought we worked very, very hard to contain them.
“Should the scoreline have been 3-0? I don’t know. Against a very good side I thought we should be reasonably happy with our performance. We’ve now got to take that into Tuesday.”
