After a tough battle at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday that saw the Blues secure a potentially valuable point, Wycombe would have been pleased to see Southend United take the points at Bury in last night’s crucial encounter at Gigg Lane.

A draw in the match between Wycombe’s promotion rivals would have been ideal but Gareth Ainsworth’s men would have taken a Southend victory beforehand.

The result means that Wycombe’s fate is now very much back in their own hands and victories in their two final matches should be enough to secure third place.

The Chairboys will now have to overcome Morecambe on Saturday before a potentially nerve shredding affair at Northampton Town’s Sixfield’s Stadium the week after.

While on paper the two fixtures look winnable for the team, the current injury crisis shows no signs of relenting and with the added blow of Aaron Pierre’s suspension, manager Gareth Ainsworth will have to shuffle the pack once again.

I’m expecting Peter Murphy to fill in for the suspended Aaron Pierre on Saturday, it will be a shame to lose Murphy’s tenacity in the middle of the park but he is the only remaining squad member who I believe could do a job in the centre of defence.

If he can prove to be as adaptable as his peers have been then Wycombe have nothing to worry about.

The versatility that the players have shown so far this season says all you need to know about the team spirit and group mentality that exists in this current Wycombe side.

Gareth Ainsworth has assembled a group of players that will run through brick walls for him and they have certainly had to do that in the second halves of both the Exeter and Wimbledon matches.

The fighting spirit that the players have shown in the last two games should stand them in good stead for the last two fixtures. The trouble with facing teams who have nothing to play for, as will be the case against Morecambe, is that you never quite know what you’re going to be up against.

If the team can show the same levels of energy and commitment then there is absolutely no reason why they can’t end the season victorious.

I think the experience of Wycombe’s older heads is going to be vital in the last two games. The likes of Hayes, Bloomfield and Bean need to be vocal on the pitch and make sure their teammates play the game and not the occasion.

Fans have seen previous Wycombe sides slip up when it’s really mattered, only to be bailed out by fortunate results elsewhere, that luck won’t continue forever and this team need to ensure that it doesn’t need to.
