Matt Bloomfield admitted that he was frantically scrolling through his Twitter feed on Tuesday night to keep up to date with events at Gigg Lane.

Bury and Southend, the two teams below Wanderers, played out a game which could have seen Blues drop out of the top three with just two games left to play.

But following a 1-0 win for the Shrimpers Wycombe are now back in the driving seat in the race to secure the final automatic promotion spot, much to the relief of Bloomfield.

When asked if he was keeping one eye on the score the 31-year-old said: “More than one eye, I was keeping both eyes on the score.

“I was updating my Twitter every two seconds to make sure that I knew what the score was. I had the Champions League on the tele and I was updating my Twitter which I’m not sure my wife was too happy about when she was trying to feed the baby and look after her.

“I needed to know the score so I was making sure I knew. You’re only human, you want to know what’s going on and I wanted to know what was happening. I’m sure all the lads were the same.”

One Wanderers employee who didn’t keep in tune with developments in Greater Manchester was manager Gareth Ainsworth, who instead decided to train his attention on the Champions League rather than League Two.

He said: “I go through enough on a Saturday afternoon when we’re playing so to put myself through that on a Tuesday when I’m at home with the family and we’re not playing would be torture.

“I got on with a bit of work that I needed to do for Wycombe, I watched a bit of the Barcelona game and I ended up getting lots of texts and calls when Southend had scored.

“There was one or two text messages flying about but I wasn’t actively listening or keeping up with the game on social media. It was wait for the result and go from there.”
