John Salomon is hoping Watford Ladies will be able to play at Vicarage Road again in the future but says a key off-the-field priority for the Golden Girls is to continue to increase their match-day attendances.

Despite being beaten 4-1 by Aston Villa Ladies in their first game at the Hornets’ home on Saturday, the day was a success for the club as they surpassed their target attendance of 1,000 by attracting a crowd of 1,102.

Asked about the possibility of playing matches at Vicarage Road in future seasons, the Watford Ladies boss said after the match: “I hope so. The most important thing for the season is we want to try and recruit as many of the people that came to today’s game and have them continue to support us for the rest of the season.

“We’ve got eight more home league matches, we’ve got the Continental Cup as well and it would be great to have that continued support because today’s crowd was loud, it was exciting, it was like in one of those cup games where every time you get the ball in the attacking half you could hear the crowd noise rise.

“It’s fantastic to have that support today and if we get that continued support and our average support is up then hopefully because today’s event has been so successful, if this [playing at Vicarage Road] is something that is an option for us again next season we’ll try and get even more people in.

“That’s the direction women’s football is heading in. We’ve all got targets around attendance increases and we want to work as hard as we can to get people in to watch the games.”

The Golden Girls will seek their first Women’s Super League 2 win of the season when they travel to Reading Women on Thursday, while the next game at Berkhamsted FC home is on Sunday, April 19 against Millwall Lionesses.
