It was Miguel Layun who ended up on the winning side as his Mexico team beat Juan Carlos Paredes' Ecuador 1-0 in Saturday's friendly.

Layun played the full 90 minutes as part of a midfield three in a 3-5-2 formation and his Hornets team-mate Paredes featured for 83 minutes at right back, as Real Madrid striker Javier Hernandez settled the contest in Los Angeles after almost a quarter of an hour.

There were a number of Golden Boys in action over the weekend.

Odion Ighalo earned his second Nigeria cap on Sunday as he came on for the final 24 minutes during the 1-1 draw with South Africa.

On the same night Daniel Tozser played all of Hungary's goalless Euro 2016 qualifier with Greece and Ikechi Anya set up Scotland's fourth goal during their 6-1 home qualifying win over Gibraltar.

On Friday night Matej Vydra's Czech Republic Under-21s lost 1-0 to England in Prague thanks to a goal from Watford-born Tom Carroll. Hornets goalkeeper Jonathan Bond was an unused substitute.

One Watford player who wasn't involved over the weekend was Craig Cathcart, as Northern Ireland beat Finland 2-1 in their qualifier. Manager Michael O'Neill instead started Gareth McAuley and Jonny Evans at centre half and Fleetwood Town's Conor McLaughlin at right back. Doncaster Rovers' Luke McCullough and his former Manchester United team-mate Paddy McNair were preferred on the bench. Cathcart was an unused substitute when Anya's Scotland beat them on Wednesday.
