Redbridge picked up a big three points in their battle against relegation from the Isthmian Division One North on Tuesday, beating Romford 2-1.

The victory lifts Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton’s side out of the bottom four relegation places and the Motormen also hold a three-point lead over Barkingside, who are directly below them having played three games less.

Romford took the lead a minute before half time when Loui Hazlewood struck. But Redbridge took just five minutes of the second half to draw level through Aaron Scott.

And with the game seemingly drifting towards a draw, Mark Nougher buried a 79th-minute penalty to seal the three points for Redbridge.

On Saturday the Motormen were soundly beaten, losing 3-0 at home against a strong Needham Market side on Saturday.

The Marketmen boasted ex-Ipswich Town and Leeds United midfielder Ian Westlake, as well as former Colchester United captain Kem Izzet.

And second-placed Needham took the lead early on when Michael Brothers strode unchallenged into the penalty area and fired beyond Mark Parker.

Needham were unable to build an their early opener until after half time when Ryan Crisp steadied himself and drilled in off the base of the post.

Soon after Luke Ingram was an hand to meet Rhys Henry’s cross and turn home the visitors’ third.

The Motormen travel to Ware on Saturday.

Waltham Abbey were beaten 3-1 at home by Ware in the Isthmian Division One North on Saturday, extending their losing streak to three.

In strong wind, it was visitors Ware who coped better with the conditions and took the lead after just seven minutes.

Anthony Thomas found himself on the end of a good move, pulled away from his marker and chipped Abbey goalkeeper Jayden Purdue to open the scoring.

And it was 2-0 after just 20 minutes when Charlie Ledula ran at the nervy Abbey backline and was brought down inside the penalty area. The referee pointed to spot and Thomas doubled his tally to leave Paul Wickenden’s men with a mountain to climb.

The referee was then brought down himself and had to be replaced by one of his assistants after suffering a twisted ankle. Ware’s assistant boss, Tolga Huseyin, took over assistant referee duties.

Ware put the game out of sight before half time. Alaa Oujdi lofted a ball forward which was caught in the wind and left goalkeeper Purdue in no man’s land as he charged off his line to attempt a clearance. Ludula promptly picked up the loose ball, advanced and fired into the empty net.

Boss Wickenden made three half-time changes and was eventually rewarded when Tom Bruno rose highest to head home a free kick and restore some pride for the well-beaten Abbotts.

Waltham Abbey are away to Barkingside on Saturday and host Dereham Town on Tuesday.

In the Essex Senior League, Waltham Forest were beaten 3-0 at Clapton on Tuesday night.

Saturday’s clash with Greenhouse London was lost to a waterlogged pitch.

The Stags travel to Basildon United on Saturday.
