Matt McClure admits he hasn’t hit the goalscoring heights of his early Wanderers career, but believes he may just have found his shooting boots as the league leaders continue their impressive start.

The striker bagged a brace during Saturday’s 4-1 trouncing of fellow promotion hunters Southend United, including a well taken mid-range drive to put the tie beyond doubt.

The 23-year-old finished Blues’ top scorer in his first full season in 2012/13, notching 11 goals in 28 appearances, but he has struggled to find consistency in front of goal in the last 12 months.

He has also been suffering form a shoulder problem which has kept him out of the starting lineup for the last few games.

But after doubling his tally for the season in Saturday’s game and walking away as Man of the Match for a tireless 90 minutes work, McClure believes the performance can act as a springboard to free-scoring form.

He said: “It was my first start in a little while, i haven’t scored as many goals as I should have so far this year, hopefully that’s a starting point for something good now.

“I’ve had a problem with my shoulder which we’ve been being careful with, Stevie [Craig] has come in for the last few games, he’s done well to in those games and he helps me a lot, he’s an experienced pro and he’s a bit more physical than me.

“I seem to score in patches, when I first broke through I got six in eight, so hopefully I will go on another run like that.”

McClure claims the winning mentality at Adams Park means the side is able to bounce back after going behind, as they have done in three of their last five games.

And though sitting pretty at the top of League Two with almost half the campaign gone, the forward says no one is getting carried away with the turnaround success.

He said: “Three of the last four games we’ve gone behind and come back to win, we don’t like doing it but it shows very good character, we all stick together and and we believe that if we go one or even two nil down we can bring it back and know we’ve got goals from everywhere.

"We’ve got a small squad and that could play against us with injuries, but we’ve got out tally of 55 points to get to and we want to get there as quickly as possible.

“We’re all enjoying our football and winning every week helps. Winning breeds confidence and we’re extremely confident, we know our jobs we need to get to that target.”
