GARETH Ainsworth warned Wanderers fans that while things are looking good on the pitch, it will take time for everything to be sorted behind the scenes.

Overspending at Adams Park during Steve Hayes' spell as chairman almost led to the club going into administration, and the lack of financial prudence in those years is still being felt around the club now.

The highly regarded youth academy was scrapped, the training ground was sold and leased back, and Ainsworth hasn't been able to pay a penny in transfer fees during his two years in charge of the club.

That nearly meant relegation into non league football last season, with Wanderers staying up by the skin of their teeth on the final day of the campaign.

New chairman Andrew Howard has steadied the ship, but Ainsworth said more work is needed in the background to ensure Wanderers have a brighter, more sustainable future.

He said there's a greater commitment amongst the Adams Park staff to make sure the glory days can came back to the club.

But he said it's only if that's sustained that things will continue to be much more promising on and off the pitch.

Ainsworth said: "There's not been many teams who've not paid for anyone in the summer. I haven't paid for anyone in two years - I can't do it.

"We are a club that needs a couple of years to get back on our feet. We've been in big trouble money-wise.

"We've got a good man at the helm now, who's running it right.

"It will take time but we will get the club back and we will get it back healthy again. In the meantime if we can enjoy times like today, then brilliant.

"I know there's a long job to do, so I'm not going to get carried away."

He added: "It's brilliant to have committed staff. It's something that maybe was lacking last year from certain individuals. Those individuals are no longer at Wycombe Wanderers - you have to be committed, you have to give everything you've got.

"It's the passion in the performance I most take heart from. It's great to see the boys give absolutely everything, chucking themselves in front of balls - they won't give up."
