GARETH Ainsworth was delighted Wanderers were able to hit back at the doubters who questioned whether the wheels had fallen off the bandwagon following a rare defeat.

Blues responded in perfect fashion to last week's disappointing televised defeat to Burton by hammering ten man Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road five days later.

Defeats have been rare for Ainsworth's men this season and the 3-1 loss at Burton's hands was undoubtedly the worst of the lot.

But that was followed up by the biggest win of the season as Cheltenham were put to the sword by the tune of four goals to one.

Wanderers haven't lost successive matches at any point this campaign and Ainsworth is thrilled his side are proving people wrong by immediately responding to any setback they suffer.

He said: "Monday was full of people saying the wheels have come off, this is it. It's great because people said that after Tranmere and after Exeter. It's great to be able to come back."

Blues had a numerical advantage for three quarters of the game after Lee Vaughan's rush of blood to the head when challenging Peter Murphy in midfield, but even before the game's pivotal moment they had threatened to run riot.

Twinkletoed Paris Cowan-Hall showed some sparkling wing play, Paul Hayes proved an excellent link man between midfield and attack and Steven Craig bullied the demoralised Robins defence into submission in a dominant Wanderers performance.

Craig, with his first of the season, and Cowan-Hall both netted in the first half to overturn an early deficit, before Joe Jacobson's thunderbolt and Matt McClure's composed stoppage time finish wrapped things up.

Ainsworth said: "I felt we set up perfectly against them. Obviously the sending off helps - and I think it is a sending off, it's a horrendous tackle - but I thought we were in control of the game.

"The way we played early on at 11 v 11, we performed well. Once the ten men came, the lads really took control of it.

"We played some great football today, which was great to see after Monday. We were well deserved winners. I'm pleased for the boys - they got it right today."
