Heurelho Gomes admits he was very emotional when Oscar Garcia revealed he was stepping down as Watford’s head coach due to health concerns, but believes the Spaniard is strong enough to manage again.

Oscar suffered from chest pains on September 14 and spent a week in hospital. He returned to Watford’s training ground on Thursday, September 25 and sat in the directors' box during Saturday’s draw with Blackburn Rovers.

However, despite being part of the Watford team photo taken on Monday morning, Oscar left his position later that day as he aims to fully recover.

Billy McKinlay has taken charge of the side and oversaw a 2-1 win against Brentford on Tuesday night.

Speaking after that game, the Brazilian goalkeeper was asked about Oscar's departure.

He said: "He (Oscar) was very emotional when he told us and it was very emotional for me too.

"He told me that we can achieve good things over here and he wanted to be part of it as well but unfortunately he can't.

"He is part of the club and he will be supporting us from wherever he is. That will be a strong point for us.

"It's sad but it's about him getting the confidence back. It's not easy but I believe he is young enough and strong enough to manage again.

"We didn't know before about Oscar's health problems. He has to be careful now and it's not easy for him.

"It was brave of him to make the decision to leave. The club gave him the opportunity to sit back a bit but he felt not good enough to be helping us because of his health.

"His decision is very brave and he has to be looking after himself."
