Hartley’s Sam Billings was named Kent County Cricket Club’s player of the year at the Spitfire cricket awards on Saturday.

Members and supporters voted for the dynamic and aggressive wicket-keeper batsman by an overwhelming majority in an online poll.

Billings, who has played his club cricket for Hartley in the Kent League since 2007, has enjoyed a stunning season with 1423 runs in all formats, including 11 fifties and one century, as well as claiming 74 dismissals with the gloves.

“It’s a huge honour to be voted player of the year by Kent members and supporters,” Billings said.

“To play for my home club is a massive buzz and I feel we have made a step forward this season and there’s more to come.

“We’ve got to build on our performances this year and be more consistent.

“There’s a lot of talent in the dressing room.”

Billings was particularly impressive during the Royal London One-Day Cup campaign, scoring 458 runs at an average of 114 and a monstrous strike rate of 154.

This fantastic form earned the 23 year old a place in England’s performance programme that will travel to Sri Lanka this winter.

Vice-captain Sam Northeast (1,636 runs) received the batsman of the year award, Mitchell Claydon (82 wickets) was bowler of the year and Alex Blake was fielder of the year.

A special presentation was also made to 2005 Ashes hero Geraint Jones for 15 years’ distinguished service to the county.

Jones, 38, scored over 13,000 runs and produced over 900 dismissals in an illustrious career for Kent.

Kent women’s cricket team celebrated another successful season after lifting the one-day cup and reaching T20 finals day.

The Kent and England captain said: “It’s an honour to lead such a great group of players.

“Thanks to all the supporters for their votes.”

A phenomenal season which consisted of 31 wickets, including a spectacular spell of 4-7 in an emphatic victory over Essex, guaranteed leg-spinner Erin Bermingham the bowler of the year award, while Lydia Greenway was fielder of the year.

Kent’s Tammy Beaumont, Charlotte Edwards, Natasha Farrant, Lydia Greenway and Laura Marsh have been selected for England women’s performance squad to tour New Zealand in February 2015.
