A Johnny Williams goal, his first in seven seasons at the club, was sufficient to give Watford their second win of the season over Portsmouth at Vicarage Road.
Manager George Kirby suffered a blow when debutant Duggie Woodfield, a recent £28,000 record buy from Wolverhampton Wanderers, received an injury that ended his season and effectively his career.
Watford's fortunes did not improve, and they were to win only three more games all season on their way to relegation from the second division.
