MATT Ingram said Wanderers need to stay level headed after a good start to the season – believing they’ve exceeded expectations so far.

Blues were tipped by many to struggle this year but have so far defied the critics by accumulating points at the rate of two a game on average to put them among the early season front runners.

Those points include six picked up from a pair of 3-1 wins against sides who were playing in League One last season, Carlisle United and Stevenage, and Ingram is encouraged by the start Wanderers have made so far.

But the former John Hampden Grammar School pupil said the pressure’s now on to maintain the standards they’ve set in the opening weeks for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old said: “I don’t know about a mark out of ten but we’ve definitely done really well. If you look at the fixtures, as we did at the start of the season, we had a tough first few games as the majority were against teams who came down from League One.

“Have we exceeded expectations? I’d say so, definitely. We were one of the favourites to be relegated.

“We have to keep level heads – it’s only five games into the season.

“We’ve set our standards and they are really high. We need to keep them and don’t let them drop. If we do that, points will take care of themselves. It’s about keeping level headed.”

Ingram recorded his second clean sheet of the campaign in the goalless draw away at last season’s beaten play off semi finalists York City on Saturday, and the keeper was pleased at the resilience shown by his team mates.

The High Wycombe-born stopper struggled with his goalkicks in the first half as he had a strong wind blowing into his face, before Wanderers grew into the game after being pinned back early on and had the better chances to snatch all three points.

Ingram said: “I think it’s a good point and it was nice to keep a clean sheet as well.

“There’s a lot of sand on the pitch, it’s a bad pitch for this time of year.

“First half was tough having the wind against us. We had to clear our lines well. Second half it died down a bit and we had it with us, and we had the slope with us as well.

“We limited them to long range shots, which I could deal with. We had the better chances in the games – all in all, it’s a good point.”
