The Hornets' first away trip in the top flight took them to the Dell where Southampton were put to the sword 4-1.
Playing a 4-2-4 formation, goals from Gerry Armstrong and Ross Jenkins plus a brace from Nigel Callaghan did the damage.
Southampton boss Lawrie McMenemy, later a colleague of Graham Taylor's on the England coaching staff, concded that first division teams "are not used to facing that kind of pressure".
