Charlton striker Igor Vetokele says he is delighted with the way his Addicks career has started.

The Angolan international, a summer signing from FC Copenhagen, has netted two goals in the opening three matches of the Championship season.

His latest strike came in last night’s 3-2 win over highly-fancied Derby, a result which kept Charlton close to the early season pace setters.

Bob Peeters’ men have now recorded seven points from their opening three games and Vetokele is surprised at how quickly the new-look side have adapted to Championship life.

He said: “Considering the number of players that have come in, eight of us, I’m a little bit surprised but if you look at us all we are adapting quite.

“We’re all very happy. We’ve got two victories at home and one point away and we are playing good football in moments.

“We are trying to do our best and we worked very hard in pre-season on our shape and how to find each other on the field.”

Vetokele added: “We’ve tried to build relationships and its going great at the moment.

“We have got some good players now and it is still early to say where we’ll finish at the end of the season - we have to see from game to game and try to make the best of them all.

“At the moment we are winning games but our job is nowhere near done yet.”

The hosts dominated the early proceedings of last night’s encounter with George Tucudean’s first Charlton goal rewarding their strong start.

Jamie Ward levelled for Derby after half an hour before Yoni Buyens’ penalty had Charlton back on front on the stroke of half-time.

Vetokele then nodded in to make it three 12 minutes from the end, but Ward made it a nervy finish when his tame shot eluded the grasp of keeper Nick Pope.

And the Charlton forward believes that their impressive start to the game set them up for victory against one of the division’s favourites for promotion.

“If you saw the first 20 minutes we passed the ball around well but then we lost our composure a little bit,” Vetokele said.

“The gaps started getting a little bit bigger and that is when they came into the game and started playing around us.

“During the second half they were a good team but we did well to hold on for the points.

“This is a very hard league. Every game is played from first minute to 95th, you have to go every two or three days and work very hard on the pitch to get the points.

“You don’t get anything for free here.”
