Hornets centre-back Essaid Belkalem made his World Cup debut as an 89th minute substitute in Algeria’s 4-2 win against South Korea in Group H last night.

The 25-year-old was introduced in the closing moments in place of Madjid Bougherra to help secure Algeria’s first World Cup victory since 1982.

Park-Chu young, who is still a Hornets player as his loan from Arsenal doesn’t expire until June 30, started in the game for South Korea but was replaced in the 57th minute by Kim Shin-wook - it is the first time two Watford players have played in the same World Cup match.

Algeria took the lead through Islam Slimani and Rafick Halliche then headed home their second of the game.

Abdelmoumene Djabou struck a third before Song Heung-min's strike reduced the deficit.

South Korea’s attempted comeback was halted when Yacine Brahimi added Algeria's fourth but they did score a second through Koo Ja-cheol.

Algeria take on Russia on Thursday in their final group game and know a victory would secure their place in the last 16. South Korea face Group H leaders Belgium on the same day.

I trust every fan stayed up to witness this exciting and momentous chapter in our club's history ;-)
Obviously I hope Essaid goes on to become a Watford legend but to refer to Park as a Watford player is a bit tenuous to say the least..

Agreed... he's a Watford player on a technicality! Nothing more...

He played well and Algeria did not concede while he was on the pitch. Surely enough for a top European side to put in a £8 million bid?

I was fully expecting Belkalem to give away a penalty within seconds of coming on

but on a serious , well done Essaid, fantastic to be playing in the world cup, and the pride, togetherness, and indeed skill shown by your team puts England to shame

Good on him, have to say it was a great match - end to end and yes I did watch the match in the hope that he came on, but then I am a football fan, and club over country wins every time for me. Park - who isnt "our" player was rubbish.. good riddance to the Nani panic signing.
Hope Mr Belkalem is able to push on now and become a regular in our team - we have a strng Central defence pool now - strength and depth - bring on the new season, Fernando and Almen fully fit - Matej coming back (hope!)- its going to be a good one

We have a big CD pool, I wouldn't say a strong one.

We should be getting credit for preparing him for his role of keeping the bench warm then coming on late to waste time.
