The Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is to hold a family fun day as it opens its doors for the first time this weekend.

Players of all abilities are invited to try out hockey and tennis at the London 2012 legacy venue on Saturday as part of the Great British Tennis Weekend.

There will be the opportunity to try out cardio tennis, mini tennis, wheelchair tennis and the chance to participate in quicksticks hockey, a format of the game aimed at seven to 11 year olds.

Sessions are free with all of the equipment provided at the £30m arena funded partly by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.

Shaun Dawson, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority chief executive, said: “This is a venue for the whole community and our free family fun day will give everyone the chance to sample the world class facilities on offer.”

The centre will be a new hub for disability tennis and a base for tennis community activity, whilst hockey clubs from the region will train and play matches on the pitches.

A number of high-profile events, including the 2015 European Hockey Championships and the 2018 Hockey Women’s World Cup are set to be staged at the venue.

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre hosted the London 2012 Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis competition and was the only venue to be purpose built for the event.

The day will run from 10am until 4pm on Saturday. To sign up, visit www.greatbritishtennisweekend.com or turn up on the day.
