It's 22 years to the day since former Hornets manager Graham Taylor controversially substituted Gary Lineker while England boss

The Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm was the venue of England's final game in the 1992 European Championships.

With England behind and needing to score, manager Graham Taylor substituted Gary Lineker who was chasing Bobby Charlton's national goalscoring record but had made little impact in the tournament.

Replacement Alan Smith came close to scoring but England went out and Taylor was pilloried for the decision to replace Lineker.

The incident would resurface seven years later as Taylor took Watford back into the top flight and Lineker, by then an established BBC presenter, aimed frequent criticisms at his former international manager.

It is a team game and if Gary had well over an hour and did not perform, get over it.

England waited for Root to score 200 and Ballance 100 but failed to win the test match.

GT was the boss and like it or not Lineker was the first England manager for a long long time to go into a final Euro game of the first round not already eliminated.

Lineker was over the top in 1992...should not have been selected for Sweden 92...better centre forwards were available...

I would like to add that he is the biggest creep on tv and poor presenter in my opinion...only suitable for bbc

Lineker never looked like scoring in that match and, had he not announced his retirement from International football before the tournament started, may well have had further opportunities to break Bobby Charlton's record. Should have kept his mouth shut, waited to see what happened in the Euro's, and then decided what he was going to do. He wanted to retire at 'the top' – he didn't and that's what he's peeved about.

Graham Taylor is a loyal man of dignity... Everything that Gary lineker is not. That's all that needs to be said.
