Watford agreed the sale of 21-year-old goalkeeper David James to Liverpool for a seven-figure fee.
James had been the Hornets' first-choice goalkeeper for two seasons since the departure of Tony Coton, the first of which saw him play a key role in the club's avoidance of relegation and win the club's Player of the Season award.
James would go on to enjoy a top-flight career of rare length, holding the record for the greatest number of consecutive Premiership appearances, on two separate occasions, and spend more than ten years in the England national squad.
