Malky Mackay was appointed as Watford's manager in succession to Brendan Rodgers, becoming the third consecutive Hornets boss to take charge in his mid-thirties.

Having been a key part of Aidy Boothroyd's promotion-winning side in 2005/06, Mackay had moved onto the coaching staff and impressed as caretaker for four games prior to Rogers' appointment the previous season.

Mackay appointed Sean Dyche, another no-nonsense centre-back for the Hornets in his playing days, as his assistant.
