Gianluca Vialli was sacked as Watford manager, becoming the second man to fail to live up to the challenge of succeeding Graham Taylor.

On arriving the previous summer he had undertaken a complete overhaul of the club's playing and coaching staff.  His highly paid squad never looked like delivering the promotion that had been banked on and became a millstone around the club's neck.

Vialli's statement on departing read: "I am very disappointed by the decision of the club, especially as my work at Watford was still in its early stages."

Vialli was to issue court proceedings against the club over the termination of his contract, a settlement being reached the following summer.

An expensive disaster of an idea.

Mostly GV's mates out for a salary for an afternoon in the park.

The team he inherited had no stars or egos but had many players that did get promoted. Club men - shipped out or sold to pay for this nightmare.

Not all GV's doing I know but surely someone must have spotted that 8 long term contracts on the field and more off of it should be doing more than 14th place and administration.

Many of the players people saying in Wobby were the best the club has had since the mid 1980's were told they were not wanted, given away or released for small sums to enable the club to continue in existence.

Vialli was hopeless as a manager and his record since then proves this.

Has it only been twelve years?
Lewington, Simpson, Boothroyd, the Salad Boys, Rogers, Malkie, Ashcroft, The red helmet, Dyche, The Pozzos, Zola, A promotion playoff win, a relegation, a promotion playoff defeat, several financial crises, massive turnover of players except Llloyd Doyley.
Good or bad, the club has never us bored

Slightly off topic but this reminds me of Vialli's team mate from Juve, Ravinelli? Middlesborough lured "Grey Arrow" to Teeside by telling him it was a pleasant area by the seaside. Hmm....
