England played Brazil in a friendly at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.
Watford winger John Barnes was winning the tenth of his 79 international caps; it was to provide arguably the most memorable moment of his career.
Shortly before half-time, Barnes picked up the ball on his halfway line; his run took him past five Brazilian defenders before he rounded the keeper to score an extraordinary and much replayed goal.
Mark Hateley was to add a relatively prosaic second after the break, heading in a Barnes cross as England recorded their first victory in Brazil.
