Former Charlton and Liverpool star Jonjo Shelvey is set to play in Sunday’s chairity game in Eltham to raise funds for ex-Addicks keeper George Howard who was seriously injured in a car crash in South Africa last month.
The 20-year-old came through the ranks at The Valley with Shelvey and now his long-term friend has agreed to play in the fund raiser which takes place at Coldharbour Leisure Centre, Chapel Farm Road, at 1.30pm.
But Shelvey won’t be the only player taking part with Charlton connections, as John Humphrey, Peter Garland and Steve Gritt also set to feature.
Howard went on to join Gillingham and there is also a strong contingent of ex-Gills involved in Sunday’s game, including Barry Ashby, Nicky Southall, Bradley Dack and Andy Hessenthaler.
Yesterday it was confirmed Howard had made some progress by being taken off a ventilator, meaning he can breath unaided without the assistance of a life-support machine.
But the road to recovery remains a long one and organisers are hoping Sunday’s game will provide vital funds for the young keeper’s family.
