Watford have signed former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes on a one-year contract with the option of a further year.

The 33-year-old Brazilian will leave Spurs when his contract at White Hart Lane expires at the end of June and will subsequently join the Hornets.

On Thursday, Watford missed out on former Yeovil Town goalkeeper Marek Stech, who returned to first club Sparta Prague on a three-year deal.

Gomes moved to England in 2008 from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven and was a regular between the sticks for Spurs until 2011, making 95 Premier League starts in three seasons.

Eventually ousted by Brad Friedel, Gomes was loaned out to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in the 2012/13 season but played just nine times as injury curtailed his loan spell.

Born in Jao Pinheiro, Gomes began his career with Brazilian side Cruzerio before moving to Europe to join PSV in 2004, where he spent four years and made over 100 appearances.

The 6ft 3in gloveman is a Brazilian international who has been capped 11 times at senior level, going to the both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups with the Selecao.

Twice a Confederations Cup winner with Brazil, at club level Gomes has won the Eredivisie four times and the Brazilian Serie A once.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry! Definitely a quality keeper but definitely error prone, and always seemed to have mental issues. It's like replacing Almunia with Almunia!

Good luck Heurelho! I feel you may also be joined by a younger keeper at some point as well, with Bond perhaps going out on loan.

and thanks for the memories Manuel! In particular the double penalty save against Leicester. My fondest memory ever as a Watford fan I think!

Hope this turns out to be an inspired signing, my concerns would be that he is prone to an error plus he doesn't seem to control his back 4 as perhaps we need ...

One of my friends is a Tottenham fan. One of his biggest 'laugh or cry' moments was that Champions League match against Inter, where in the first 15 minutes he conceded four goals and got sent off. It's certainly going to be an experience having Gomes in goal!

He'll need some game time in pre-season, it's been a while since he played or even had a run of games so I think we can expect a slow start.

Very pleased with this signing. A player with bags of experience, from premiership, Europe and international couldn't really ask for more. For those whom are moaning about errors, all keepers make errors but it's about what they do during the full 90mins each game.
With manny going means we'll have an outfield captain which I'm pleased about...possibly a good bargaining tool with Deeney?
Good luck Gomes and glad the club are getting the squad together early this time!

I can't believe people are writing him off already!! This signing shows the calibre of player we can sign... Wouldn't have had this 4 years ago... Fact is, it doesn't matter how good your keeper or back 3/4 is... If we continue to try and defend 1 goal leads on our 6 yard box, we will continue to concede goals

Presume this means Almunia won't be returning - bearded genius that he is.
Gomes is a good signing, good keeper, makes mistakes as do all players - shame that keeping mistakes = goals conceded but outfield mistakes just normally means loss of the ball.
Plus, I think it also means that if Bond doesn't go out on loan, he will be able to challenge a lot more for the number 1.

What utter tosh is posted on here by some so-called supporters. Exactly the same derogatory comments made about Gomes as were made when we signed Almunia. This guy is a Brazilian international with many years experience. He has played at the top levels of football world-wide. He has played over 90 games in the Premiership---most of those games performing excellently---but making the odd mistake like all keepers. (I remember Gordon Banks and Shilton making mistakes---!). Spurs paid over 7 million for this player. This guy, at 33 still being at the peak of his career, has signed for Watford! Yes, Watford!

Quite unbelievable how fans of a team finishing 13th in the Championship can be so critical of signing a Prem goalkeeper who is also a Brazilian international!!

Get real people!! This is a good signing for us. Probably better than Almunia. All keepers make mistakes, we know that, and they get highlighted.

Look at Hart of Man City. How many bloomers does he make? Yet he is the England keeper and also that of the champions in Man City.

Annoys me that people look at blooper clips of keepers and then slate them off as being 'clowns' etc. Every experienced keeper in the world can be made to look a 'clown' by picking up on their mistakes. Remember Gordon Banks (I think it was an international against N.I) having the ball kicked out of his grasp and into the net? Gomes, Almunia, etc would have been crucified for that. Banks a clown? I don't think so. I am sure that Almunia and Bond would be made to look 'clowns' by picking up on their mistakes of just the last season. Yes, Gomes had two or three horrible, and well publicised mistakes---give him a chance!

Welcome Heurelho. I hope you have a fantastic and memorable career at Watford that includes promotion to the Premier League. I cannot believe (actually yes I can) the negativity that some of us on here express - even before the player has donned the shirt.

When I saw Gomes on the telly he was mostly brilliant - with the occasional ricket thrown in - a bit like Almunia, David James and yes Ben Foster. All keepers make mistakes and most often or not they end in conceding.

The reason they stay in the mind more now is that they are shown repeatedly on the telly. I recall Shilton making errors especially from Cally/ Barnes crosses or corners - we scored regularly from them v Southampton, but those games were not shown. The brilliant Shilton and he was, would have been slaughetered in this day and age because football fans would be much more familar with his failings.

Oh and at least he has experience of the English game. At 33 in his prime, and hopefully - depending on his character - the desire to kick start his career again.

As regards Almunia, thank you for 2 fine years as our keeper - there have been some memorable saves and none more so than that penalty. Also, especially in 2012/13, his quick release of the ball, led to many goals, put the opposition on to the backfoot and was a contribution to us being the best attacking side in English football that season.

I worry about Bond he is just not good enough at present and not sure if he ever will be.Loan is fair enough idea pointless having him sitting on the bench he needs to play league 1 or 2 week in week out then it will be clear whether he can hack it or whether he is another Loach.

Some of these comments make you wonder if some fans have only supported Watford for the Pozzo era!

This shows how far we have come as a club to attract a player of this quality. He makes mistakes...yes every keeper does, as stated above even Joe Hart, but if we actually get behind the guy he is a top class keeper for our level

And that's what is important here, remember our level! were still in the Championship, Arsenal voted Almunia there worst ever keeper...he certainly wasn't that for us

A few years ago Tom Cleverley was our player of the season! Ask Man Utd fans if they rate him

Reality check people, this is a great signing and I think based on this and Dyer we hopefully are in for a good summer of recruitment

Agree that Gomes is a quality keeper. Don't worry - Bond is not England u21 keeper for nothing. He will need a decent run in side so he does not become frustrated. Luv the Horns!

As my name shows i live in the netherlands and have seen Gomes play many times for PSV. Yes he makes an odd error but he has 2 great attributes - shot stopping and ball distribution.
I have never seen a better keeper at catching a shot and throwing the ball out, sometimes over the half way line for the attackers to run onto all in one movement.
The PSV fans loved him and is an idol in Eindhoven. They have a special song for him that i urge the 1881 to find on youtube.

Oddly, some days ago, I noticed that Gomes was not being retained, and I thought at the time 'he probably lives locally---he'd be a good signing'. then I thought 'Nah, watford won't match his wages. He'll be looking for a three year contract at a decent, mid-table club in a top European league. No chance he'll come here.'

Absolutely agree 100%. I remember Banks making mistakes, too.
I remember going to a Tottenham match with some mates and Gomes played (not long after one of his errors). He had a perfectly good game, although Spurs didn't win, and all the Spurs supporters were perfectly happy with him. On MOTD that night they went out of their way to crucify him, pulling out and repeating a couple of minor errors---the sort of things that happen to keepers in every match. They blamed him for everything including both world wars, the black death and the crucifixion. No wonder the lad lost confidence.
My only reservation is his confidence. I just hope the supporters get behind him and support him in those first few games.

Don't count chickens, over-confidence and complacency bordering on arrogance crept in last close season. I plead guilty to two of those three.

The Championship seems to get more competitive season by season. I think Aidy's promotion winning side would not get a look-in now ?

Some big clubs like Wolves, Leeds, Forest and either Derby/QPR plus the likes of Ipswich, Wigan, Norwich, Cardiff with larger budgets than ours will be in the mix - along with ourselves. And there is always a surprise like Burnley. But that's why I love the division - it is just so more exciting than the Prem.

I bet we could all come up with virtually the same top 5 or 6 teams in the Prem for next season, the Championship predictions would be way more unpredictable.

Is anybody missing it already ? Looking forward to the World Cup but it's not the same as following the horns.

Agree that Gomes is a quality keeper. Don't worry - Bond is not England u21 keeper for nothing. He will need a decent run in side so he does not become frustrated. Luv the Horns!

He is a class act, but for whatever reason it's not to be. Let's get behind the new guy and give Gomes a right warm Watford welcome. We won't be signing another top keeper now methinks. Priority is a solid commanding British style centre half, Tozser and a quick striker.

I think this is a very shrewd signing indeed, bags of experience and so what if he is prone to the odd error at premier league level, we are in the championship where he will not come under the same scrutiny. I think he will prove a better keeper than Almunia when he stepped down to join us, and overall he was a class above most of the previous we've had.

Good luck and welcome to Watford.

Good to see that we acted quickly rather than waiting around until all the half decent ones have gone.

I reckon this guy could be a good signing. Yes, we all know he made some very high profile errors back in the Premier League, but he also showed everyone that he's an incredibly capable, and at times, unbeatable keeper. It'll be like having Tomasz Kuszczak again - although this time possibly with a bit more of a commanding prescence over the back 4.

The most important thing is that he doesn't make too many early mistakes and lose confidence. Provided that doesn't happen, I can't imagine a more ideal goalkeeper for Championship football.

I'm not actually sure we necessarily need a Vydra type player again... Think about how many good midfielders we have, especially in the middle:

Tozser, Abdi, McGugan, Murray, Battocchio, Anya.

When you combine that with the otherwise questionable choice of Dyer - who let's face it, really isn't a LWB - and I reckon Sannino might be looking at a 4-5-1 formation. Of course, if we can get Vydra and keep Deeney this summer, I'm sure this will change - but honestly, I reckon it's the formation that most suits our squad at the moment. That way you can take advantage of our quality in midfield, have pace on both wings, and play Deeney up front. I admit that Deeney plays best with players running ahead of him - but with Anya and Dyer on each wing, and a player like Abdi or McGugan, or even Murray, in the middle of midfield - who is to say that the midfield can't do that job?

I agree our defence needs bolstering though. Not necessarily with first team quality players - but I reckon with Belkalem, Cassetti, Ekstrand, Nosworthy, Neill, Faraoni etc. all likely to be gone, we just need some backup. I see no problem with a back 4 of Pudil, Angella, Hoban, Doyley.

I must agree with an earlier comment by soulfulhornet as to how interesting the Championship is. Any season spent in the Premier League for a club like ours is far too stressful with too many Sundays full of disappointment.

Atleast while we are in the Championship we get to see plenty of wins with a great variety of opposition to contend with. As previously mentioned there are some big clubs in this division next season and even with the new stand our average attendance figure this time next year will still be half way down the list.

Roll on the start of next season.
