Moses Odubajo has received a great boost ahead of Sunday’s League 1 Play-Off Final after winning the Football League’s Young Player of the Month Award for April.

The award, which covers all three divisions, was given to the 20-year-old after he helped Leyton Orient to seven points last month. The Greenwich-born player will be hoping to cap an outstanding individual season in the past way possible at Wembley, having played a key part in helping the O’s to the final by scoring in the first leg of the play-off semi-final at Peterborough United before impressing again in the Matchroom Stadium return.

Odubajo told the O’s website: “When I got the phone call I was shocked that I was even in contention to win it. I’m still a bit shocked I’ve even won it. I was just focusing on the team, to get as many points as we could and finish as high as we could.

“It’s been an important season and I’m learning every game. It would be a massive achievement to gain promotion as not many people can do that in their career. I couldn’t imagine how big it is for some of the fans who come week in, week out. It is going to be a great atmosphere.”

Leyton Orient Manager Russell Slade added, “I think Moses thoroughly deserves this award. Moreover I’m a little bit surprised he has not had a call-up for England Under-20s or Under-21s as he has had a magnificent season.

“His level of consistency for a 20-year-old has been phenomenal. He has scored 11 goals this season and added many assists. He has made over 100 appearances and there are not many 20-year-olds who have done that at any level in the country.

“He is still very level-headed and has a fantastic attitude. He has great ability off both feet and could play at a higher level. There are only good things round the corner for Moses Odubajo – he is learning all the time.”
