Josh Doherty has become the third Hornets Academy player to sign a professional deal at the club in the past week.

The Northern Ireland Under-19 international centre-back has signed a one-year contract at Watford, with the club having the option of an additional 12 months.

The 18-year-old made his Hornets debut on the final day of the season. The young defender replaced Cristian Battocchio with ten minutes remaining of the 4-1 defeat at home to Huddersfield Town.

Watford head coach Beppe Sannino was asked after that defeat about Doherty and said: “It’s a good reward for the lads and the people that work every day behind me.

"Today, when I played Doherty, the game was running down and I thought he could have a good moment on the pitch. I am pleased with him because he did very well.”

Doherty follows Alex Jakubiak and George Byers in signing professional contracts with Watford.

Well done Josh!

Slightly off the subject, I see Kuszczak has been released by Brighton. Seem to remember he played well for us as a loanee keeper 2 years ago when Loach was under-performing.
Worth a punt? - and he's only 32.

It's surprising given he appears to have been their first choice keeper this season, I guess it is because he is a little expensive. However I agree with you he would be a great signing for us and it would give Bond more time to develop.

Good shout Croxley46, think Kuszczak could do a job and is a few years younger than Almunia...if we can get and he accepts that he will have to accept a lower salary than the one he had at Brighton. Seem to remember that it was on the cards that he would join us after his loan spell, but Brighton offered a larger salary.

Would seem to be a perfect replacement for MA, wages allowing.

Got to agree, manuel's wages will be comparable to kuscack's anyway I'm sure.

Couldn't afford or need them both in the championship.

Kuscack is less injury prone too.

Bond or wood need to step up as number two, I get the loan them out for experience argument but we need a reliable second choice. If bond isn't ready now will he ever be?

Seems logical, also probably means Brighton are a spent force financially and will drop away. Fingers crossed in a division where Cardiff are returning 60 million better off than when they won it 2 years ago.

Interesting to see that the BBC has not picked up this story, but they are not interested in us when we are bringing on the youngsters. And has anyone asked Ian Holloway for a comment?
