Jim Bonser stood down as Watford chairman 38 years ago today

This Is Local London: On this date in Watford FC's history On this date in Watford FC's history

Tuesday, May 11, 1976

Defying the popular belief that he would not relinquish the chairmanship of Watford Football Club in his lifetime, Jim Bonser made the unanticipated decision to step down from his position after 18 years at the helm.

His replacement was described by the Watford Observer as a "serious-looking young gentleman in a striped tee-shirt, subdued jacket and slacks and mauve-tinted spectacles."

Elton John was to oversee - and financially support - the most successful period in the club's history.

The most important date in the club's history.....within three years we were in Div 2 and since then have only spent 2 seasons below that level. Everything that has followed was a result of JB's decision to pass the baton.........

I can hear the sporadic singular shouts

Bonser Out!

The last of the local business men who became chairman as a hobby and the ads in the programme were local ones like Spivey Sports.
