SAM Wood said he had to ask the fans what was going on in the other games affecting Wanderers' survival destiny.

The travelling contingent gave the impression their side had scored more than three goals against Torquay, such was the fervour that greeted the news relegation rivals Northampton Town and then Bristol Rovers had fallen behind.

A Northampton equaliser that pushed the Chairboys back into the bottom two silenced the away fans and instead the chant of 'Down with the Torquay' was all that could be heard around Plainmoor, as a small pocket of home fans already resigned to relegation endulged in some gallows humour.

The biggest roar of the day was reserved for confirmation Rovers had been beaten by Mansfield, which saved Wanderers from the drop.

But up until that point Wood - who notched the crucial first goal of Blues' 3-0 win - had been trying to find out what was going on elsewhere.

He said: "We didn't hear anything from the management, but from the crowd when they were singing and celebrating.

"Oxford went 1-0 up and the Torquay fans were singing it was 2-1 to Northampton and we were like, 'Oh my God'. Our fans started celebrating again and we thought, 'What's happening?' We didn't know then, and we found we found out it was Mansfield.

"Throughout the second half I was thinking, 'What's the score?' I was asking the fans when a player went down, 'Is it still 1-0?'

"The fans were going crazy at the end. I got goosebumps because I knew what had happened."

Wood added: "We had to focus on our job and our job was to win.

"It's massive. No one wants to drop out of the Football League and personally I didn't want relegation on my CV."
