Ongar's Mark Cavendish has won the final stage of the Tour of Turkey - his fourth overall stage win in the event.

The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider won the first two stages of the tour last Sunday and Monday before winning his third stage on Wednesday.

Brit Adam Yates, who rides for Orica GreenEdge, claimed the overall tour title as Cavendish took the 121km stage in Istanbul in a time of 2.35.00.

Italian rider Elia Viviani - who had beaten Cavendish by a length in stage five - was the Brit's biggest threat once more, finishing second in the same time as Cavendish.

Sat on Cavendish's wheel going into the final 250m, the Cannondale rider could not beat the 28-year-old across the line on this occasion.

Cavendish's teammates again dominated the run-in with a lead-out, allowing the Isle of Man-born rider to out-manoeuvre Viviani and Astana's Andrea Guardini and claim his fourth stage win of the 50th Tour of Turkey.

Speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, Cavendish said: "I was able to sit on longer than I wanted. I thought I would have to go at 250m to the finish line, but Ale [team-mate Petacchi] was still going fast.

"I looked behind and saw some faces and knew I could sit 50m more and use my explosiveness."

Reflecting on his overall form, the Manxman said: "I’m really happy with my form. We are ahead of where we want to be at this time of year.

"I am really happy with how it has gone here and it is had put us in really good stead for the rest of the season.”
