Beppe Sannino admitted he was surprised by Watford’s poor performance at Derby County and believes his team “could learn things” from The Rams ahead of next season.

Third-placed Derby beat the Golden Boys 4-2 yesterday and it should have been by a far greater margin.

It came after a fine showing against Queens Park Rangers on Monday which Sannino believes was the best performance of his reign.

“No of course [I didn’t expect Watford to be so bad]. I thought we would do much better today,” Sannino said.

“But I do have to compliment Derby because they deserve to be where they are in the table. We could learn things from them today and put it into practice next season.

“We should never hide what the opposition deserve.”

He may have conceded four goals but Jonathan Bond was the Hornets’ best player at the iPro Stadium.

And Sannino said: “It is a shame for Jonathan that he conceded four goals today because he was very good and was ready.”

Bond played because Manuel Almunia was out with an Achilles injury.

The Hornets captain was joined by two of the club’s most influential players; Almen Abdi and Gabriele Angella, who both had knee problems.

Sannino refused to discuss whether he thought the result – and performance – would have improved had Angella and Abdi been fit.

He said: “In my entire career, I am only watching the players available for selection. I am sorry for Almunia, Angella, Abdi and (Fernando) Forestieri but the best players for me are the ones who are selected for the match.

“The players who played today could start every match so I can’t blame them [injuries]. Injuries are part of the game. If you miss players who are in form then it is part of the game.”

You can listen to Sannino’s post-match press conference below and more of his comments can be read here.

An injury update from head of medical Marco Cesarini will be uploaded later today.

In certain circumstances it is irrelevant what a coach says or does. This was always going to be one of those occasions after the disappointment of the QPR result and the realisation that the play offs were realistically out of reach.

ok so now we have 3 months, during that time we should tie down Beppe, keep the nucleus of the squad and settle everything down. Do that and with the lessons learned and experienced gained from this season - we will be a tough proposition next year.
Need to keep the ins and outs to a minimum though

If we keep the same squad we will perform the same next season. We need significant change of personnel through the close season. What we don't want are the over-spill players from Udinese and a revolving door of pointless loans - Neil, Park, McEachran, Diakete etc. We want quality and stability.

yes we need more qualty. but another pre season of Massive change will have same unsettling effect, A top striker couple of defenders and a goalkeeper is what we need

The one thing we don't need are massive changes, if we do we'll be in the same position all over again as it will take 6 months to settle them in. We need to keep Deeney, Angella, Tozser and Riera. Get another quality central defender, possibly another experienced keeper and above all a pacy striker and we'll be difficult to beat next season.

Get Vydra back to give us the pacey counter attacking option, Almunia I think unfortunately has to take a bow and as Bondy is not there as yet we defo need a new keeper. the rest depends on outgoings.

Agree though that those waste of time UK loanees have added nothing and were a waste of a good tracksuit.

We have a core of players who are easily good enough but a keeper who can command his area, a younger and fitter version of Fitz Hall, and a new Vydra (or the old one) are required for a promotion push. They won't be easy to get, for me Pozzo will need to get his cheque book out to get the the right ones.
