Lee Coan asks whether Watford supporters can finally give up on the Hornets reaching the Championship play-offs

This Is Local London: Troy Deeney in action against QPR on Monday. Picture: Action Images Troy Deeney in action against QPR on Monday. Picture: Action Images

This season was over a long time ago. Then it wasn’t. Then it was again, yet somehow wasn’t, until it was again.

Every time a last minute goal makes us think we’ve blown it all over again, everyone else fails to win and a quick glance at the table makes the dream of the play-offs mathematically possible again.

Personally I’m a bit bored of the hope, so now that we've lost to QPR can we officially give up yet? Please!

Over the Easter weekend, Watford had one good result, one disappointing result but two very decent performances.

We were arguably much better than two sides who could yet meet at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

I would struggle to think of any of the Ipswich eleven who could get in the Watford side, only a handful of QPR's players could fight for places.

Yet they both still have the potential to go up and we don't (really this time, we do not). So with it all over all over again, why don't I feel devastated? I think there's two reasons...

1) Beppe Sannino

It’s taken a while for us all to get over a man like Gianfranco Zola, but it finally feels like we’re all moving on and Beppe really is beginning to seem like our guy.

You can see his philosophy seeping into games. You can enjoy his touchline antics and the speed he is learning English deserves great respect - as does the way he conducts himself before and after games.

Also, has any Watford manager ever waved back at the Rookery with such delight?

During the Ipswich game he waved at the Watford fans with the enthusiasm of a toddler waving at a choo-choo train.

It was an absolute joy to see and I'm very much looking forward to how this man is going to shape a side next year, when he has a proper pre-season to make his mark.

Arguably we could be better off long term, having him do that in the Championship rather than in the unchartered waters of the Premier League.

2) The new midfield.

Almen Abdi, Daniel Tozser, Lewis McGugan, Albert Riera.

Ok, only two of those players are actually Hornets and anything could happen in the summer, but it is hard to remember a midfield as exciting as this.

Add either Daniel Pudil, Ikechi Anya or Davide Faraoni into the mix and it just feels like such a grown up and dangerous midfield.

No wonder both the Ipswich and QPR fans and coaching teams were quick to praise us.

I am confident we could have a great year next year with such a midfield... just as long as we still have quality strikers ahead of them and experienced defenders behind.

Of course, we might not be able to field such a brilliant midfield next year but if we can regularly name a side fairly similar to the one we saw over Easter, I really do think we might do alright in 2014/15.

I certainly would feel more optimistic looking forward being a Watford fan, than a QPR fan right now…

I think the season will go to the last game and then we will miss out, so NO the season is not over.
Bepe waves at the Rookery makes him a good manager????
I like Bepe but for different reasons.
You mention a great midfield but I think we have always had great players, the problem is the few weak ones that mess the whole side up.
Look at Burnley and Leicester, they don't have an abundance of great players, it's more about not having weak ones.
This will all be down to Nani to bring in and keep good players.

The Season as far as the play off's was over weeks ago, the away form was ok but not good enough for a top six finish. Decent bloke that he seem's to be, is Beppe is the man to take us to the Premier League ? What we do not want is so so start to the season & they sack him in November, back to square one.

Our downfall was the period under Zola where we lost 5 (I think) home games on the spin. The football was dreadful and the team seemed totally lost.

Looking at how things have turned around, is it 7 wins and 2 draws out of the last 9 home games?

Ok the away form or rather the last minute lapses need to be overcome. However the team is more organised, more consistent and look more dangerous than Zola's last few months. I got the impression that Zola was clueless when it came to defence and general tactics.

Im really looking forward to next season with Beppe in charge.

As a realist you would have to say that the chances for the 'Orns are very slim largely because there are so many teams with a higher points potential. Nevertheless they are not nonexistent !

Take the front runners Reading (67 points). Their form is crap and they have a mounting injury list. Their remaining games are Doncaster away and Burnley at home. Two draws sees a final total of 69 points. Unlikely ?

The one certainty is that we need to win all three so discussion may end on Saturday evening !

We need to add CB and Merkel into that midfield list. We have some variety and grit with that lot. Also I want to see Faraoni as a midfielder not a wing back, so give that lot a true speed merchant up front and we can tear teams to shreds. That, plus 'managing the game in the final minutes' as Betty used to say and we should be a real, consistent force. Keeping Tozser should be priority number one. Even over Deeney, dare I say it.

The trouble we face is from the speculation which the newspapers and individuals feed even though there may not be anything in it. Agents and others also in the game wanting to make a quick buck and write and sell stories so that everyone has plenty of reading over the Summer months, so they can earn and make a name for themselves. I guess the World Cup will allow a quiet period for the domestic clubs but there will be plenty of speculation to 'upset' many.

Realistically if you look through the rhetoric, one can logically think the following:

We lose Deeney. He is at an age where if he is going to step up to the next level he needs to do it now. He has been a tremendous catalyst for the side and has contributed in a way we could not have imagined 2 to 3 years ago. NO I DON't WANT TO LOSE HIM, but we cannot begrudge him a move to the top of his profession if he gets a chance.

Will we sign Tozser? I would say that is really up in the air and we don't know any personal or contractual previous agreement challenges that will bring.

Will Angella be courted by bigger clubs?

Will we be allowed to keep Riera and Merkel? I think Merkel will become a big player in future years, but Udinese may want him back? I believe Riera is due to go back?

Will Almunia stay for another season?

I don't think we have seen the best of Faraoni yet but he has in my opinion a need to learn quickly now and stop the petulance he carries.

We do need 2 strikers that can score 20 goals a season. We MAY need to possibly replace Deeney and also get a quick one who can run in behind and take the chances created. I firmly believe that we would have won more games, especially away from home if we had taken our chances to kill games off. QPR is a typical example. That makes the HUGE difference.

I do hope however that we finish in the top 9 or 10, to give us that momentum going into August. It would be a boost for the players and club as a whole. I hope the players have learnt the hard way this season, that it is NOT a given and that the mental toughness required is enormous.

I thought Riera had been released and was without a club.
There needs to be added more quality. Who would you say is the leader on the pitch. Never been a fan of goalkeepers as captains. Think Almunia is becoming a little too inconsistent so he might have to go. Need another striker, key players to stay fit, and te ability to deal with intense pressure in the last 10 minutes. We may have been better than Ipswich and QPR on the day, but the table doesn't lie, they have been consistently better over the season. Think we will be stronger next season.

Our run of 10 games without a win gaining 5 points out of a possible 30 around November/December killed our realistic promotion hopes. We've been playing catch-up with Sannino since then, but have in the mean-time built a very functional, yet fluid squad and playing style. Looking forward to next season and expect a top 6 finish, especially given what's coming down from the Prem is not top quality.

You are about right.
Zola's 20 games gave us 25 pts (1.25 pts/game). So far Beppe's 23 games have given us 35 pts (1.52 pts/game). Not greatly better but if Beppe had given us 1.52 pts/game all season we would now be sitting on 65 pts (2 pts behind Reading). The good thing is that under Beppe we are steadily getting better, so good hope for next season. Definitely fancy us to finish in the top 6 next season at least.

Don't agree. The football under Zola was far more entertaining but individual mistakes kept letting him down. With the exception of the last couple of games there have been more dire games under Beppe (Bolton, Yeovil away etc) and even on our run of home wins there was some unconvincing victories against fairly poor opposition.. The ball goes up in the air more now Andover the passing game has been worse at times. Hoping for better next season.
