Prior to the final home game of the season, general manager Graham Taylor took to the field with a microphone to announce the return of Elton John to the club as chairman and front-man of a consortium that had bought out Jack Petchey.
"Elton's coming home!" was his closing message, rousing the crowd to euphoria.
The subsequent exchanges with champions-to-be Bury soon settled the mood, a 0-0 draw punctuated with a late penalty opportunity passed up by Tommy Mooney, mathematically ending hopes of a play-off place.
