Gaz declares Fleetwood a freebie game
GARETH Ainsworth said his side can play without fear at Fleetwood tomorrow as nobody expects Wanderers to get anything out of the game.
The Blues boss described the game as a freebie, meaning any extra points they pick up from the Easter Monday trip to Highbury will be a bonus going into two massive fixtures against fellow relegation battlers Bristol Rovers and Torquay United.
But he said his side will be preparing in the right manner, joking that Easter eggs were off the menu before their long haul up to the Lancashire coast.
Wanderers have a good record against Fleetwood – who still harbour hopes of going up automatically – since the Cod Army joined the Football League last season, doing the double over them last year and holding them to a 1-1 draw when the sides met earlier this campaign.
And Ainsworth said: “Monday’s a freebie. Nobody expects anything from Fleetwood – except me, and I think we can beat them. It will be just like us to do that – every team is beatable in this league.
“We are the underdogs. If we can’t play there with no pressure and nothing on our shoulders, then we can’t play anywhere. We can go and upset the applecart and I believe we can.”
The Blues boss said fresh injuries picked up by Leon Johnson, Paris Cowan-Hall and Aaron Pierre against Northampton Town may necessitate recalls for Marvin McCoy and Steven Craig, who themselves were both sidelined for Good Friday’s draw with the Cobblers.
