Everton loanee John Lundstram says that the chance to be involved in the end-of-season promotion shake-up was the deciding factor in joining Leyton Orient on a 28-day loan deal.

The O’s captured the 20-year-old midfielder on the Football League loan deadline day, and the midfielder says that the opportunity to get a second promotion to the Championship on his CV was what made him pick Orient over other suitors.

“I just wanted to get back out and start playing football again,” Lundstram said.

“Obviously there’s a chance of going to Wembley so that’s something exciting that I’d really love to experience.

“So hopefully we can get to Wembley or even get that second spot. It’s the aim.”

Lundstram spent four months with Championship side Yeovil Town earlier in the campaign, making 16 appearances for Gary Johnson’s men in all competitions.

But the midfielder believes he did not show his best form during his time with the Somerset club - something he is keen to change during his time at the Matchroom Stadium.

“To be honest, I don’t think I’ve shown what I can do all season,” conceded Lundstram.

“Even at Yeovil I wasn’t playing at my 100 per cent.

“But I’m finding my feet again now, my confidence is back and today I played a bit better than last weekend. My confidence is growing .”

The England Under-20 international was part of the Doncaster Rovers side which earned promotion to the Championship last season.

He played an hour in the unforgettable title decider between Rovers and Brentford on the final day of the season at Griffin Park when the Yorkshire side clinched their rise up a division at the death.

Asked what he learned from his time at the Keepmoat Stadium, Lundstram said: “Just the winning mentality.

“If we go behind never give up and just fight until – as you saw last year – the very last day, the very last minute, the very last kick.”

With five League 1 fixtures remaining, Lundstram believes Orient are getting back to their best just in time for the play-offs. “We’ve had a couple of setbacks in the last couple of weeks after minor mistakes and we need to get back on track, but you can see we’re getting there,” he explained.

“It’s just minor things and hopefully we can get back to winning ways in the last five games.”
