Charlie Doris believes Watford would be in the promotion mix if Almen Abdi had returned from injury ten games earlier

Seeing Almen Abdi wheel away celebrating a rare headed goal against Leeds United on Tuesday was possibly my moment of the season so far.

Abdi, who has been injury plagued for most of the campaign, burst into the box early on and headed home an Ikechi Anya cross to give Leeds a taste of what was to come.

The midfielder then, through pure perseverance, hunted down a lethargic Leeds defence in the second half to assist Troy Deeney and put the final nail in the visitor’s coffin.

Despite being overjoyed by the return of our midfield maestro I couldn’t help but think to myself, what if?

What if our talismanic playmaker had been fit ten games earlier?

In my opinion Watford would currently engulfed in a potential promotion mix-up, such is the influence of our Swiss international.

Although we are now only seven points behind Reading with a game in hand, our chances of securing a play-off spot are incredibly slim.

Any possibility of securing a place in the top six arguably evaporated after Scott Arfield's late strike on Saturday.

For 80 minutes Watford showed they can trouble the better sides in this league, demonstrating the spirit and the attacking intent which almost took us up last season.

And, if Beppe Sannino is as wise as his demeanour suggests, he will be looking to build for next season.

If he is the man to take us forward, he should build his Watford side around the talents of Abdi.

This may seem obvious to some but Abdi is a class above most of his team-mates and has been missed monumentally over the course of this season.

His vision, awareness and work rate is that of a good Premier League midfielder not a mid-table Championship one.

The absence of Abdi from our midfield, which has been ever changing throughout this campaign, has halted any realistic promotion push for the Hornets.

One big plus we can take from the Leeds match was the instant telepathic understanding between Abdi and his new midfield partner Daniel Tozser.

Their neat exchanges and slick interplay brought some class to a typical Championship meeting.

With Abdi back in the side, Watford will be looking to cap off an inconsistent season with a positive finish.

Beating Millwall on Saturday would be a good start.

Next season: Almen, Tozser and Murray

What a midfield three that is

and Battocchio, Merkel and McGugan aren't half bad as back-up either!

We'll have the league sewn up by November ;)

As for the L*t*n T*wn supporter longcliffe (very apt name by the way) please concentrate on NON-League matters; here the talk is some Leagues above your status.

That's a good team, but not as good as last season's team and they didn't go up. Maybe Forestieri just behind the front two but not as a frontline striker, not for me.

Let's hope we get more cover up front. Less please of rubbish loans that don't play or just get sent off. Rather have our own play or sit on the bench like Park, Lucas Neil and he that should not be mentioned that QPR conned us into having. Then there is the Algerian guy. Feel a tad sorry for the 3rd string keeper that we got for cover and has not been played. OKay he is getting paid and that helps his family I guess but not to give him a run out just shows that we are crazy when we bring some people in. Dead wood out. Less than average players out then just replace average players, if it improves the squad and we can afford to do so. My neighbour at the ground suggested that some of the loans are a thought about them being available for Udinese. I don't think so! Just bad judgement on the part of WFC.

Forget Luton they are not worthy rivals. Their league rivals will be Stevenage and one day MK Dons if they are lucky.

Explain your point concerning Gary Woods. Every club needs a third string GK. He signed the contract knowing that MA was first, JB was second and that he would be third and probably would only play reserve team football occasionally. If you put him in some cup or league games ahead of JB, how demoralizing would that be for JB ?

Murray not good enough technically to play in the centre of the park, Works hard and can score a goal but if your looking at challenging automatic promotion he would be a squad player for me.

Mcgugan has looked a better player since coming back from injury - think Sannino has kicked him up the backside. Battochio has been much improved and is also very good technically but maybe more suited to the premier league than the physicality of the championship but I do like him as a player

I'm amazed you received any thumbs up for your miserable comment. Fair enough these articles aren't always that well written but I thought this article was better than most fan views we've seen on the WO.

On reading the article again there is the feel of a child trying to write like a grown up, which some people could find endearing The problem with it, like so many other fan's views, is that there's nothing really original, thought provoking or insightful in it.
