The second division's two dominant sides met at Ashton Gate where Jason Lee's goal in a 1-1 draw gave the Hornets the point that confirmed their long-anticipated promotion.

The result left Bristol City four points clear with each side having three games to play and Robins fans in the Wedlock Stand, split between home and away support, unveiled a 'Bristol City, Division 2 Champions 1997/98' banner that was to prove inaccurate.
