Beppe Sannino’s assessment of Watford’s 1-1 draw against Burnley this afternoon had a familiar ring to it.
That was hardly surprising as the game followed a script that has been seen with increasing frequency this season: the Hornets take the lead only to let points slip by conceding a late equaliser.
Troy Deeney’s fine early strike looked set to give his the three points against the promotion-chasing Clarets but they were made to regret their inability to net a second goal when Scott Arfield levelled four minutes from the end of normal time.
“If you saw the match, in my opinion the answer is yes,” he replied when asked if he felt Watford deserved to have won. “This game reflects perfectly Watford’s season. The last ten minutes we always throw away everything we do.
“When we had the chance to kill the game and score the second goal we should score and now maybe we could smile and Watford people could have a different evening.”
Despite the disappointment of conceding late on, Sannino was pleased with his side’s display. He said: “Considering the team that we were facing I’m very pleased about the performance. I did count 12 chances to score, including the goal that we scored, so I think the team did what I was asking them to do and if you see the celebration of Burnley when they equalised you can see how they were battling for this goal and how they were happy because maybe they didn’t imagine they’d equalise.”
