Cristian Battocchio has been taken to hospital to have a knee injury assessed after he was stretchered off during the first half of Watford’s 1-1 draw with Burnley this afternoon.

The Hornets midfielder sustained the injury in a collision with Ben Mee and play continued for a couple of minutes before refree Stuart Attwell allowed Battocchio to receive treatment.

Early news of the injury was revealed when Beppe Sannino was asked to comment on the performance of the referee, who was in charge of his first game at Vicarage Road since the infamous ‘ghost goal’ incident against Reading in 2008.

“I don’t like to speak about referees,” the Hornets head coach responded. “In the past I never did and I don’t want to speak today. What is a shame is that after the collision the ball was still in play so this was delaying the the time to assess Battocchio and at the moment Battocchio doesn’t look well.”

Watford’s head of medical Marco Cesarini explained: “The injury is a knee injury but we are assessing him. He’s in the hospital now and straight after this press conference we will see him.”

Burnley boss Sean Dyche was also asked about Attwell and the former Watford boss said: "I was here when the moment happened and it's a tough one. But he has to come back here at some point. In lieu of that, it's always going to be awkward. But generally...interesting.

"I was a little bit aggreived at our goal. I haven't seen it, I must say, the offside goal. It looks from when I was watching the game, I was surprised that it was given."

Attwell was nothing short of disgraceful today. I honestly don't understand how he is allowed to step foot on a football pitch. I would be saying this even if we had won. He was absolutely terrible!

yeah, it's always handy to have a referee as a focus for our frustrations

he robbed us again, didn't he?

we demand justice

what for? i don't know

but let's just hate Attwell anyway because it helps ease the pain

No we didn't have possession, but Burnley didn't put the ball out either. It went out after a misplaced pass. Why then did we give possession back?

We have had some pretty poor refs this season but Attwell managed to live up to his reputation. I thought he did reasonably ell in the first 20 minutes but it went downhill from there. How he managed to book only one player is beyond me. It was not a dirty game but Faroni is very unlucky to get a yellow card when there were some seriously bad challenges which went unpunished. He also clearly thought Battochio was play acting - he was no more than 10 yards away! !!!!- but maybe he needs to go to Specsavers!!!
Frustrating but we should have been three up (at least) before they scored. Oh well here's to next season as I think we will finish 7th, but not a bad finish considering the state we were in early December.
On, and fantastic to see Almen back, obviously a little of the pace but I hope he does not suffer any reaction.
Overall I would not criticise any of our players today, some mistakes but an honest shift from them all and they deserved more from the game. Maybe with a half decent refereee............

'Tackle' if you can call it that, happened right in front of me, it was a cowardly knee high challenge well disguised in the blatant block off, how the linesman didn't see it is 'Atwell like'....... to compound it when Atwell finally blew up, why did he stop on his way to Battochio to talk to a Burnley player again delaying the Physio being waved on!!?? The man is a complete disgrace and totally out of his depth at any level!!!

Also anyone else spot that the medical team haven't grasped the fact it take 4 people to carry a stretcher, one at each corner, even with a midget on board like Battochio seeing them try to lift it with a kit bag and other medical equipment as well was comical, and embarrassing! #nearlyanotherissamo

I've doubted Battochio at times this season but today he was looking really good, covering a lot of ground and getting into some good positions. He has shown more and more quality of late. I thought we looked dangerous with him on the pitch. I'm gutted for him if his season is over. Abdi is class and I'm delighted he's back but he's slightly rusty too as can only be expected. Ideally he wouldn't have been introduced til 2nd half. Burnley's dogged cloggers got lucky today and they know it.

Please be fair to the Burnley player from where I was sitting and the angle of his body and the flight of the ball, why did he aim it at the dug outs? Our players reaction after was to return the ball to Burnley? it was an act of sportsmanship which I recognised and applauded.

I only hope it is not as serious as it appeared but I fear the worst, cruciate ligament or worse? I am sure the club will give him the best care. In my opinion this affect both the team and supporters. Our supporters were the lowest I have heard them at home for a very long time before Battachio went down, oly in the last 10/15 mins did they get back on song. What about Harry Hornet for the best league football mascot? Where and when do we got? The guy is brilliant, is it the Stig?

Why did the Football League appoint him in the first place given what happened against Reading? Absolute nonsense to do so, but what else do we expect from the people that run our game.

Not stopping the game for Battocchio was the most serious crime he made. The Burnley player did kick it out on purpose and to be fair to them they had to keep playing until they could do so. Ben Mee was very concerned at the time.

How can you have doubted Battocchio? He is a young player developing and learning and has an enormous amount of ability and heart. He will be a top player, can break up play pass and score goals. What more do you want?Thank God Bepe insisted we keep him. Have to ask questions about Nani.

He affects games, i.e. does he stop goals, create goals and score goals. YES

What got my goat about Atwell and the lino is that CB was down and out IA was trying to wave on the medics and all that Atwell could do is talk to Deeney, presumably about Troy's comments before going on to see if it was a serious injury. Atwell is a blinking disgrace. Not just for that part of bad judgement but all over the place. Grr!
