Watford reportedly agree deal for French defender Nicolas Frey but Chievo could block move

Watford have agreed a move - in principle - with Chievo defender Nicolas Frey according to reports in Italy.

The Hornets have reportedly reached an agreement with the experienced Frenchman, whose contract expires in the summer, but Chievo have the option of extending by another year.

Respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealed the deal and explained the switch to England will be dependant on Chievo's willingness to let the player leave, rather than activating a further year.

Frey, the younger brother of ex-Inter Milan and Parma goalkeeper Sebastien, is 30 years old and can play in the centre or on the right of defence.

He started his career at Cannes before spending a decade in Italy. Frey moved to Legnano in 2004 and after a year switched to Modena, before joining Chievo in 2008.

Frey worked under current Hornets head coach Beppe Sannino at the start of this season before the Italian was sacked.

Why do you say that? He's an experienced defender but has never played in England.

Neither had Abdi, Ekstrand, Vydra, Pudil, Tozser, Fessi or Battocchio before we signed them. I don't think that we need to be starting from a belief that we've got another Santos or Fabbrini on our hands - I'd rather adopt a more optimistic standpoint personally.

I can see Cassetti sticking around but from an 'experience and popularity within the squad' point of view, rather than actually playing as much as he is. Reece Brown out, Lucas Neill out... maybe even Belkalem?!

Starting the rebuild early suits me fine. I like being organised!

Given that Chievo was Beppe's previous club, is this a sign that he expects still to be here next season, or are we just picking his brains before we let him go?

I'm optimistic but I think a more cautious wait and see approach is better than the blind confidence which resulted in many lost bets last year.

Will be happy with this IF we are offloading Brown, Neill, Belkalem, Fitz (and possibly Nos ?) and then get one more central defender. Not happy if at least 3 or4 dont go as I think too many defenders will mean too much rotation. Just a thought

Not trying to be funny, but defending in one country is pretty much the same to the next... surely?

I'm glad Beppe is bringing in players that he KNOWS. This one isn't off the Udinese-Granada scouting system, this is straight from the head of the man who knows how he wants his team to play so I'm very excited for this man to come in!

Should be interesting to see if he is a WB or a RCB for us, but I would assume RCB.

Not quite. The pace and directness of the Championship requires a slightly different skill set to the slower, more tactical approach in Italy. For instance, I have noticed Angella, while mostly solid and reliable has looked rather flat-footed *at times* this season (cast your mind back to Ince's goal in the defeat to Blackpool; Derby's winner in the 3-2; or Middlesbrough's first in the 2-2 draw). Players like Angella and Ekstrand are comfortable when the ball is being played on the floor in front of them, but as soon as it starts getting hoofed and, in Blackburn's case, thrown into the area, they look decidedly more shaky. Lloyd and Nos aren't exactly the tallest of CBs, Fitz is constantly injured, and Hoban is too skinny to deal with targetmen, which is why we have struggled in the air of late.

Angella won everything in the air on Saturday, so it would appear he's learnt fast then.
