Beppe Sannino believes Watford’s players showing more confidence in possession was one of the main reasons the Hornets were able to end their 14-match winless run away from home.

The Golden Boys beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 this afternoon, with Gabriele Angella, Lewis McGugan and Troy Deeney, twice, scoring the goals.

Watford had not won away since October 5 and speaking to the media after the game, in English, Sannino said: “It is very good because it has been a long time since Watford won away – too many lost and too many drawn.

“Today I am very happy for our fans and my players.”

Sannino admitted he did appreciate the four goals his team scored heading into the final ten minutes, considering their record of conceding late in games this season.

“We scored four times,” was Sannino’s initial response when asked what was different today compared to other away fixtures.

He continued: “My team always had confidence but today they were confident when passing and moving. We passed it better than before.

“I am pleased that we scored four goals because our problem has been the last minutes of games because we always concede [late] goals.

“The last ten minutes of matches have cost us a lot in terms of points.”

Despite the scoreline, Watford struggled to defend crosses into their box for most of the match and a more potent strike force may have punished the Hornets.

Sannino said: “There is always something to improve. One win does not give you the mark, you always have to improve.”

“Sometimes a good loss gives you more teaching than one win,” Sannino added later in the press conference, when asked if ending their winless run would help the players psychologically.

“If you have a team of good, professional guys then you do not need these things [a psychological boost from ending the winless run].

“If you want to be a great team then you have to be able to go through not only great wins but also negative results.”

Sannino confirmed Almen Abdi appears to have come through his 20 minutes unscathed in the midfielder’s first outing since late January due to his ongoing foot condition.
