Former Watford head coach is favourite to take charge at Nottingham Forest after the sacking of Billy Davies

This Is Local London: Picture: Holly Cant Picture: Holly Cant

Former Watford head coach Gianfranco Zola is the overwhelming favourite to take charge at Nottingham Forest following the sacking of Billy Davies.

Zola is as short as 5/6 to take the job at The City Ground with some bookmakers while former Forest player Stuart Pearce is second to Zola, with odds of 4/1.

Davies was sacked following the Reds' 5-0 loss to rivals Derby County at the weekend. The defeat was Forest's seventh league game without a win and saw them drop out of the play off positions.

Zola has been without a club since he left Watford in December. It has been reported Forest have already made contact with the Italian.

However, it appears Zola was not the club’s first choice. Neil Warnock is understood to have already turned down the job claiming there were certain criteria he could not adhere to.

Warnock has subsequently backed both Zola and Pearce to work at the Championship club.

what a contrast that would be!!!!
from what was probably the most unpleasant person in football to Mr
Zola, what a coup.
however thats 4 managers sacked by the owner in less than 2 years
so watch out ,AND Warnock turned the job down.........so

The 20/1 available about Malky sounds rather better value than 5/6 Zola. The bookies love nothing more then inventing a short-priced favourite and trying to attract some mug money off the back of nothing more than a few rumours. Yesterday it was Colin, today GFZ. Tomorrow - Stuart Pearce?

If he takes the job I liken it to the Cardiff City job at the moment.

Nice guy in charge who genuinely cares about football and wants to do well (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gianfranco Zola)

Against a foreign owner with no deep knowledge of the game trying to make a few quid and wants full control of recruitment at the club and will happily hire and fire as and when he pleases

(Kuwait Owners at Forest and Vincent Tan).

Sorry Gianfranco, but I think you are better than people like this. You may turn things around but you are always going to be a losing streak away from the sack.

Malky will not go to a Championship club. there will be plenty of Premiership offers in the summer - including Norwich, which he would no doubt prefer to risking his reputation at Forest, who are no longer in a good position for the play offs. Plus he may have had his full of impulsive owners and the relative stability of Norwich may be a better bet.

On the face of it, Zola seems like a good fit e.g style of football and ownership structure/ interference in footballing matters.

I feel a bit sorry for Billy Davies - I know not the most likeable character buit a good manager at this level. Forget his character for the moment.

Forest had a great run that cemented a play-off place then they had a succession of injuries to key players like Andy Reid (equivalent in playmaking terms to our Abdi). Reid was brilliant at Forest v us. With the injuries, The results suffered over the last 2 months and now gone. Football is too fickle now, neither Sir Alex or GT would have survived long enough to acheive what they did, nowadays.

Forest's weakness also appears to be their defence - hardly Gianfranco's strong point is it. Wrong for him I think.

Malky cant take any job at present as it will ruin his compensation from Cardiff if he does so that's a non starter. This is not the right job for Zola , He is a football man and the pozzo are football men , this chancer at forest will want things done his way. It will be a foreign manager I guess not many of us will have heard of.

Just saw a headline on BBC of 'Moyes right man for Man United - Charlton' , I thought it should have read 'Moyes right man for Charlton - Man United ' ;)

Zola doesn't fit the profile for the Forest Job, he's not mad and he's not a mercenary. Stuart Pearce probably ticks at least one of these boxes, but Paul Ince could tick both!

Zola wasn't given the coaching staff he needed at Watford.. The former assistant manager who left and Zola was a perfect combo.. Being the manager of top euro teams ment he had vast experience to help Zola produce the Football we payed last season.. Then brining in an assistant who had never been in a roll that important before.. Beppe as defence/assistant coach and Zola in charge would have been a golden ticket..

Keep well away from that club Zola. You're a nice fella and I don't want to see you hung out to dry by that muppet after a bad run of results through losing key players to injuries.
