Watford struggled at home to Crystal Palace in the third division (south).

The visitors might have been more than a goal to the good at the break but a stout performance by Arthur Woodward kept them at bay.

The game turned on a 62nd-minute penalty conceded by Palace captain Jimmy Wilde. Frank McPherson converted the spot kick - the last of his 77 goals for the club - and Tommy Barnett followed up with two headers to render Bob Bigg's late strike mere consolation for Palace.
