Michael Morrison remains confident Charlton will avoid relegation following the weekend stalemate at Millwall.

Victory would have seen Jose Riga’s side leapfrog the Den club out of the relegation zone, but the 0-0 draw instead ensured the Lions retained a three-point cushion over their rivals.

Charlton, though, have four games in hand and Morrison reckons Millwall would rather be in the Addicks’ shoes than their own.

The Valley defender said: “I think if you asked Millwall or us what position you’d rather be in then they’d say ours.

“But it is up to us to make it count.

“You would rather be relying on yourself, and if you don’t achieve survival then you have let yourselves down rather than on others to make mistakes.

“It is good that it’s in our own hands. It was important that we didn’t lose and it keeps the gap at three points.”

Morrison added: “If we can win one of our games in hand then we’ll climb out of the bottom three on goal difference.

“It keeps us within touching distance.

“A defeat here and just mentally a six-point gap would have looked a lot bigger, but now it is still at three and we have got the games in hand.

“It is in or own hands and it is up to us to make them count.”

Morrison was signed by former manager Chris Powell, who was surprisingly sacked and then swiftly replaced by Riga last week.

And the 26-year-old admitted everyone has now got to focus on Charlton rather than the managerial turnaround in order to secure survival.

He said: “I want to stay in the division.

“Whether you are playing for yourself or playing for Charlton, it is a difficult task for everybody.

“As long as Charlton stay up, then everybody is going to look a better player.

“It is important that we play for ourselves as well as each other to keep Charlton up, regardless of whether that is for Chris Powell or Jose Riga.

“It is about staying up for the football club.”

On Powell’s dismissal, the Addicks vice-skipper said: “I found out late on Monday night that he had gone.

“Chris had done great job and personally I enjoyed every minute of it.

“He has really helped my career but this is one of these things that can happen in football.”

Morrison added: “He will be the first to say that these things happen, and everyone has got to stick in and move on for the good of the club.

“He is a Charlton man and he’ll want all of the players to play well for Jose and keep us in the league.”
