Cautious Watford say Almen Abdi has a chance of playing again this season

The Hornets remain cautious when discussing Almen Abdi's fitness but the club have not ruled out the midfielder playing again this season.

Watford refused to discuss Abdi's injury at any length for several weeks after his latest set-back at the end of January.

The club’s current player of the year has had a torrid time this season due to an unusual foot condition which has resulted in him not starting a match since August.

Abdi has been suffering with Plantar Fasciitis, which leads to unexpected sharp pains in his foot, for most of this season but he made a return to action in mid-January and featured in four matches from the bench before being withdrawn 14 minutes after his introduction at Nottingham Forest on January 28.

Head of medical Marco Cesarini had continually stressed Abdi’s recovery wasn’t complete and that there was the risk of him still suffering pains in his foot.

The club have been considering their options when it comes to Abdi's treatment but have decided to persist with "conservative treatment".

Speaking on Monday, Cesarini said: "With Almen we have been waiting because we think we have a little chance to have him on the pitch before the end of the season and we have to be sure that if he plays again then he is in the position to not have set-backs.

"It is not an easy situation because we have been in this situation in the past and now something has changed a little but we are on top of it.

"I don’t want to tell you anything that could be misunderstood. We have to be careful and monitor him day-by-day."

He continued: "The treatment at the moment is conservative treatment. He is having all the therapy recommended by the specialists. He isn’t having any strange therapy.

"At the moment, it has been suggested to stay with the conservative treatment because there is a chance he could be available this season, we wanted to stay with this."

Full injury news ahead of this weekend's game will be uploaded later this evening.

frankly its not worth risking him as the season only has two months to go.we have plenty of midfield cover.let the injury fully recover and get him ready for august ready to go.

what do they mean by He isn’t having any strange therapy.
What could they have done that means stange...? has he been rolling his foot over a kinder egg ball in the hope of a full recovery? Has Subo been singing to his feet? Has he been watching Happy Feet in HD on the clubs big screen at night in the hope of inspiring him to recover? Has Abdi been soaking his feet in a fish spa in the hope the little fishys can eat his problem away?

Agreed. What's the point now. Season finished and we have cover anyway. Want to see him fit and healthy next season.

I agree, no need to risk rushing him, out midfield is quite good with Murray, Merkel, Toszer and Battochio.. If by some miracle we look like making the play offs at the end of the season and he is ready then fine but if we are going to miss out I reckon its best to rest him and let his dodgy foot heal.

New Keeper (why keep manu if he plays when he wants and bond not quite ready)

Lloyd, New CB, Ekstrand/Angella

Anya, Toszer, Abdi, Murray/Battocchio, Pudil

Deeney, Forestieri/Vydra (why not, eh)

I realise its pretty much the same team but we have a good squad, just need a bit more time together

By conservative treatment, I presume they mean letting it heal naturally. However, if an operation would definitely fix the problem, I would go for that, even if it ruled him out until the start of next season.

What about Tommie Hoban - a class player!

Operations are almost never performed for Plantar Faciitis. Very small success rate. This may be something that he is stuck with. I've had it on and off for years.

An operation is the absolute last resort, I think they mean a steroid injection, which isn't guaranteed to work either. The condition can become chronic for some sufferers unfortunately.

Lloyd's not going to play every game now, and we don't know if he will be offered another contract? Where will Cassetti, Hall, Nosworthy, Belkalem & Brown be next season?

Belkalem and Brown will go, Cassetti may be with us, Hall will be in a splint again and Nosworthy will have a bike wrapped around his neck...

Is anyone else wanting a British centre half for next season, Marco, Angella and Ektsrand are all very good footballers but none of them can physically match half of the strikers in this league. For those, like me, who were there on tuesday, Chris Brown won I'd say 80% of the long balls pumped into him! Hall is the ideal man but I fear his injuries have gotten the better of him
